Five Reasons You Should Have A Hobby

Charis Gambon June 17, 2022

Hobbies are often something that we have as children but don’t always follow through with as adults. There are many reasons why adults struggle to maintain a hobby, but you should always try to make time for something you are interested in. I have several hobbies myself and I’m glad to have them. Here are five reasons why you should have a hobby.

Build Creativity

Most hobbies require a form of creativity. Creativity is often viewed as an important skill and developing that through something you enjoy means it can be directly transferred into your work within your job. Having an outlet to be creative is hugely beneficial to your life.

Build Confidence

As a hobby is something you choose to do, you often spend a lot of time on it. As a result, you become very good at the chosen hobby and being good at something is very rewarding. This in turn will increase your confidence which will help you in your job as confidence is a skill employers always look for.

Chance to Learn

With a hobby you are always learning and improving. You often don’t even realise you are as it is not formalised learning. Learning helps to keep your brain active and is an important aspect of life.  While some learning is only applicable to the hobby, the skills learnt are widely applicable to any aspect of life

Reduce Negative Stress

A hobby is something that you enjoy spending your time doing and, as a result, can be a great stress reliver.  That relief occurs because hobbies refocuses your mind on something that you enjoy. Getting a break from stress and worry at work, and doing something you enjoy, can be beneficial for the mind and help better prepare you to handle future challenges and stresses.

Chance to Socialise

Choosing a hobby provides the perfect opportunity to make some new friends. These new friends will share the same interests as you, which will make for a great friendship and provide you someone to talk to about your passion.  Hobbies give you the chance to meet so many people just like yourself and to build groups. Many of my best friends are people I have met through my hobbies. Socialising is also a core skill for life and will help you when working as part of a team.
