A Deep Dive Into England’s European Championship Squad

The England team have made it into the semi-finals of this European Championship. They have also solidified themselves in history as the year that women’s football really took off.

You may know a few faces and names, but let’s get to know England’s squad a little better.

Goalkeepers

Mary Earps

This 29-year-old is England’s senior goalkeeper, having played for England for some five years.

Her first England cap was in 2017 against Switzerland, where she kept a clean sheet.

Earps signed for Manchester United in 2019.

Hannah Hampton

The 21-year-old made her senior England debut in the 2022 Arnold Clark Cup, where she kept a clean sheet against Spain.

In 2021, she made switched from Birmingham City to Aston Villa.

Ellie Roebuck

This 22-year-old made her senior debut for England in 2021.

Sadly, she missed out on much of the 2021/22 season due to a calf injury. This limited her to only 10 apperances out of 22, her lowest since 2017.

Defenders

Millie Bright

The 28-year-old currently plays for Chelsea FC, having previously played for Doncaster Belles and Leeds Ladies.

Bright is a strong leader and fierce cog in England’s defence line. She is the team’s vice-captain.

Lucy Bronze

This 30-year-old currently plays right-back for Barcelona when she isn’t on the England national team.

She is one of the more famous faces within the team, having won the 2018/19 UEFA Player of the Year and taking the Silver Ball at the Women’s World Cup of 2019.

As a full-back, she won a trio of Champions League titles with Olympique Lyonnais.

Jess Carter

Carter has been playing at the top level since she was only 16, where she made her debut for Birmingham City.

The 24-year-old now makes up part of Chelsea’s back four.

Her England debut was in 2017, then had to wait some four years to be called up again for the team.

Alex Greenwood

In 2015, Greenwood was the youngest member of England’s bronze-medal-winning team.

Usually seen playing left-back, Greenwood also plays centre-back and shines in set-pieces.

The 28-year-old currently plays for Manchester City in the FA Women’s Super League.

Rachel Daly

Whilst this 30-year-old is classed as a defender, she is extremely versatile and is frequently moved around the pitch.

Daly currently plays for Houston Dash, with 33 goals behind her.

Demi Stokes

Stokes is part of the Manchester City back line, after previosuly playing for Sunderland in the Women’s Premier League.

The 30-year-old has been part of the England set-up squad since 2014 and narraowly missed out on the Women’s World Cup in 2015.

Lotte Wubben-Moy

This 23-year-old made her senior international debut in 2021.

After three years away at university, Wubbey-Moy returned to Arsenal in 2020 and solidified herself as first choice for the club.

Midfielders

Georgia Stanway

This 23-year-old left Manchester City at the end of the season and is now signed with Bayern Munich.

With City, Stanway scored 57 goals from 165 appearances.

Stanway scored a goal in the 2022 Euros against Norway in an 8-0 win.

Keira Walsh

Walsh plays for Macnhester City and has won every domestic trophy with the club.

She recently celebrated her 200th appearance for the club.

Jill Scott

This 35-year-old was struggling to get pitch-time with Manchester City, so spent time on loan to Aston Villa and Everton during the past 18 months.

In February 2021, Scott made her 150th apperance for England.

Ella Toone

Toone was signed to Manchester United in 2018 and has since established herself as part of the senior squad.

The 22-year-old is now part of the England squad and scored a har-trick in October 2021 against Latvia during the World Cup qualifications.

Fran Kirby

Kirby started her career with Reading before moving to Chelsea in 2015.

She has been part of the England squad since 2014, with 17 goals behind her.

Kirby scored against Ireland in the 2022 Euros.

Leah Williamson

The 25-year-old started off as a midfielder but can sometimes be seen as a central defender.

Williamson currently plays for Arsenal in the FA WSL.

She has solidified her spot on the team as England’s team captain.

Strikers

Alessia Russo

The 23-year-old strikers has represented England at all age groups.

She scored her first senior international hat-trick in November 2021, against Latvia, within 11 minutes; the quickest by any England player at any level.

She currently plays up front for Manchester United in the Women’s Super League.

Beth Mead

Mead has been breaking records this year. She broke the Women’s Super League assists record in April 2022, surpassing Karen Carney’s score of 36.

The 27-year-old scored her 50th WSL goal this season.

She currently holds the most goals scored for England in the 2022 Euros, with 5 goals.

Beth England

The 28-year-old plays as a forward for Chelsea in the FA WSL. She previously played for Doncaster Rovers Belles and Liverpool.

She picked up her first caps in 2019, after the Women’s World Cup.

Chloe Kelly

After a nasty anterior cruciate ligament injury, Kelly came back to Manchester City and helped her team make it to the FA Cup final.

The 24-year-old represented England in the under-17, under-19 and under-20 national teams.

Ellen White

This 33-year-old is one of the most well-known faces on the England squad and the 2022 Euros stands as the strikers third Women’s Euro tour.

White has scored 2 goals so far during these Euros and is now England’s record goalscorer with 50 goals.

She currently plays for Manchester City.

Lauren Hemp

The 21-year-old was named England’s Young Player of the Year in 2016, 2017 and then PFA Women’s Young Player of the Year in 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2022.

She scored a goal against Norway in the 2022 Euros as part of an 8-0 victory.

Hemp is now part of the Manchester City squad.

Nikita Parris

This 28-year olf plays as a forward for Arsenal in the Super League.

She made her senior England debut in 2016 and was part of the squad that made the semi-finals at the previous Euros.
