Cody Simpson has had one heck of a career change. Once a pop star and teen heartthrob, he is now in Birmingham, England, competing for team Australia in the Commonwealth Games.

An impressive, swimmer, Simpson qualified for the Australian Swim Team in May 2022, after finishing third in the 100m butterfly during Australia’s team trials.

Cody Simpson Competes at The Commonwealth Games

After racing the 100m butterfly, Simpson told Channel 7: ‘I want to inspire young people to know that they can do whatever it is they want to do, even if they feel like it’s too late or they’re too old to pick something up, because it’s never too late.’

He explained that he is ‘still gathering the experience’ so is therefore ‘still gaining confidence.’ However, the singer-turned-athlete is already ‘way ahead’ of where he thought he would be at this stage, and is just happy to be at the Commonwealth Games.

‘And I think, win or lose today, I’m going to go back to the drawing board and make sure I come back stronger,’ Simpson finished.

Simpson Takes Home a Gold Medal

At the Games this week, Simpson got his hands on a gold medal in the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay. He swam for the team in the heats, but missed out on a spot in the final.

Simpson also competed in the semi-finals of the 50m butterfly, and swam in the final of the 100m butterfly on Wednesday. He came in fifth place, with a time of 52.16.

His impressive journey can be highlighted by taking a look at where Simpson was just before the last Commonwealth Games, held in his native Australia.

Back in 2017, Simpson performed for the Queen on Commonwealth Day, as part of a show to launch the Queen’s Baton Relay ahead of the 2018 Games hosted by the Gold Coast.

‘It felt like I was dreaming as to me it is one of the biggest honours that could ever be bestowed upon an Aussie,’ Simpson said.
