Angela Lansbury was a film and TV icon whose career spanned over 70 years. In that time, she made her mark on the world, becoming a national treasure and beloved by children, adults and grannies alike.

Lansbury won six Tony awards, six Golden Globes, a Laurence Oliver award as well as over 20 combined nominations for other awards.

Sadly, Lansbury passed away in October 2022 at the age of 96. So, in honour of her, here are some of her most memorable and loved roles.

Gaslight, 1944

Lansbury’s film debut was a kncokout. She played Nancy, the young maid to Ingird Bergman and received her first Academy Award nomination aged just 19.

The Picture Of Dorian Grey, 1945

Lansbury portrayed dinger Sibyl Vane alongside Hurd Hatfield in a performance that critics still label as one of Lansbury’s best.

She won her first Golden Globe for this role, as well as her second consecutive Oscar nomination.

Murder, She Wrote, 1984

Murder, She Wrote ran for 12 seasons over 12 years, amassing some 264 episodes. It was a hit and that was down, mostly, to Lansbury’s outstanding portrayal of the writer and amateur detective, Jessica Fletcher.

For her role, Lansbury was nominated for 10 Golden Globes, winning four. She was also nominated for 12 Emmy’s, which landed her the record for most Golden Globe nominations and wins for Best Actress in a TV Drama.

Bedknobs and Broomsticks, 1971

This 1971 film is still a childhood favourite for many people. Jumping off the back of Mary Poppins, Bedknobs and Brookmsticks mixed animation with live action to create a musical for the masses.

Lansburys played Miss Price, a witch with powers, who helps the war effort during The Blitz. Lansbury earned a Golden Globe nomination for her role.

Beauty and the Beast, 1991

While we never actually see Lansbury in this film, it is one of her most beloved characters. Voicing the motherly Mrs Potts, Lansbury won the hearts of children and adults alike.

Her rendition of the film’s title song won the Oscar for Best Song.

Mary Poppins Returns, 2018

In one of Lansbury’s final film appearances, she took to the screen as ’The Balloon Lady’ in the reboot of Mary Poppins.

Whilst her character was no more than a kindly old lady who sells balloons, she was as regal as ever and allowed us to revel in her greatness one last time.
