Moving away is a huge step for thousands of students to take each year so staying on top of your packing for university is key.
If you are moving into university accommodation, also known as halls, then packing is definitely on your mind this summer. While it is incredibly exciting, as this is often the first time moving out for a lot of students, it can also feel pretty daunting.
Packing for university:

Work out what you actually need
This is probably my most important piece of advice. There is no point taking absolutely everything to university if you don’t need to.
It is better to work out what you will actually need and only pack that, as your room likely won’t have endless space for all your random junk. This includes trying on your clothes and donating the items that don’t fit or you no longer want. Wardrobe space in uni halls is often tight, so only take what you are actually going to wear.
Communicate with your flatmates
Lots of universities have Facebook pages to help you find your flatmates before you move in, and these are very useful when it comes to working out what you need to pack.
If you are able to find your flatmates in advance, it might be helpful to make a group chat and find out who has certain kitchen items or designate each person to bring one thing. For example, there is no point in everyone bringing a toaster, or everyone bringing a kettle. If you only need to bring one large kitchen item, it will help with packing and cut down on space (and unnecessary spending).

Make lists
Lists are going to be your best friend when it comes to packing for university. Make separate lists for each category so that it is easier to keep track of everything:
Kitchen (cutlery, appliances, plates, food etc.)
Bathroom (shower caddy, toiletries etc.)
Bedroom (decorations, bedding, laundry basket, lamp etc.)
Studying (books, stationary, etc.)
There are plenty of pre-written lists out there for uni students, which it is often worth having a look at to make sure that you don’t forget to pack anything obvious or leave out items that you may not have thought about before.
Don’t leave it all to the last minute
Moving to university is already a stressful time- don’t make it any harder by leaving your packing to the last minute! It is a good idea to begin organising early so that you are able to get any items you don’t have in time.
Remember, people all over the country are also going to university, so items such as pots and pans and bedding can sometimes sell out close to the start of term. Give yourself enough time to pack everything you need so that you don’t forget anything and feel calm and organised before making the big move to halls.
