The highly-anticipated Game of Thrones spin-off House of the Dragon is just a few short months away, as the air date has finally been revealed, so here’s all we know about the series.
In 2019 HBO announced it would be producing the spin-off after the success of the GOT series’ and since then they’ve drip-fed fans information about the show in a staggered fashion, but we do know it’s going to hit our screens on August 21 after the company shared a very GOT-style tweet to announce it.
What is House of the Dragon?
Like the GOT series House of the Dragon will be based on a book by George R.R. Martin – the novel Fire and Blood, to be specific. The series will focus on House Targaryen – of which Emilia Clarke’s character in GOT, Daenerys Targaryen, was part of.
This show is more of a prequel to the much-love award-winning Game of Thrones as it is set hundreds of years before the events OG show and it will chronicle the rise and fall of the troubled Targaryen dynasty.
As for any plot details, as with GOT, they are being kept tightly under wraps and fans will have to wait until August for those – and to see if we’ll get any dragons featured in the series.
Who’s Starring in it?
It might be a spin-off, but House of the Dragon has a completely star-studded cast to take it through the ten episodes of the first season. The cast was announced last year when HBO dropped a teaser trailer and some production stills showing some well-known faces in Targaryen-white wigs.
Paddy Considine will play Viserys I Targaryen, king of Westeros when the story begins, with Emma D’Arcy playing his daughter and heir Rhaenyra. Matt Smith also stars as Viserys’s brother Daemon.
Alongside this, Olivia Cooke is set to play Viserys’s second wife Alicent, Rhys Ifans has been cast as Alicent’s father and Hand of the King, Otto Hightower, and Steve Touissant appears as the “Sea Snake” Corlys Velaryon. Star-studded indeed.
