Almost eight in ten Brits say they are convinced Boris Johnson lied in his response to the partygate scandal.
The Prime Minister has officially been found out for his involvement in No. 10 lockdown parties after being issued a fixed penalty notice. But he’s remained adamant he didn’t know he broke the news, however many Brits aren’t convinced.
Did the PM Lie?
Since the PM received the fixed penalty notice he’s received calls to quit from not only is opposition, but members of his own party and the bereaved families who lost loved ones due to COVID.
Now, members of the public have come into the picture as in a recent poll by YouGov and The Times revealed almost eight in ten Britons (78%) think Boris Johnson has lied in his response to the issue of parties being held at Downing Street during lockdown. Just 8% think he has not lied, and 14% were unsure.
Tories Aren’t Convinced
It turns out it’s not only some Conservative MPs who aren’t convinced the PM in his excuses. According to the poll half of those who currently intend to vote Conservative (51%) say Johnson has lied about partygate. A quarter (25%) of Tory voters said they thought he hasn’t lied and a further 25% unsure.
As for those who swayed towards the Conservatives during the 2019 general election were actually more likely still to think that the Prime Minister has lied, with 61% thinking so.
Of course, it comes as no surprise Labour voters were almost unanimous in their opinion of the PM’s alleged dishonesty, with 95% of those who backed the party in 2019 and 96% who do so now accusing Johnson of lying.
96% of current Liberal Democrat voters sided with the Labour voters on the matter thinking the PM lied and 97% of those who voted Lib Dem in 2019 GE thought the same.
