Ever since The Devil Wears Prada was released in 2006, people have had it out for Andi’s boyfriend, Nate. But now, Andi herself – Anne Hathaway – is putting her two pence in and telling us how she viewed her onscreen boyfriend.
Why Do People Hate Nate?
Of course, the theory that Nate was a villain moves away from the more obvious plotline that Miranda Priestly, played by powerhouse Meryl Streep, was in fact the true antagonist. However, people believe that Nate was another villain in Andi’s life, aside from her cruel and demanding boss.
Nate, played by Adrian Grenier, has been subject to scrutiny for years now. In 2016, a Buzzfeed article called the character out for being an unsupportive boyfriend and holding Andi back in her career.

In 2021, talking with Entertainment Weekly even Grenier called the character “self-involved” and “selfish”.
“I might’ve been as immature as him at the time, so I personally couldn’t see his shortcomings. But after time to reflect and much deliberation, I’ve come to realize the truth in that perspective.”
What Does Anne Hathaway Think?
In a segment of Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, Hathaway, who played the young aspiring journalist Andi Sachs, was asked, “Do you agree with fans that Nate was the true villain of The Devil Wears Prada?”
Host Cohen instinctively answered “Yes, he was!” However, Hathaway took some time to think. Ultimately, she answered that, while he was a brat, he wasn’t a villain.
“He did behave like a brat, but I also behaved like a brat in my 20s, and I hopefully grew out of it…I think that that’s what we all do. And I wouldn’t want to be defined by my worst moment in my 20s, certainly, so I don’t hold Nate as a villain, actually.”
