Grimes confirmed she and Elon Musk have had their second baby in secret, but fans are wondering if they’ve secretly done something else – like got married?
The singer – who’s real name is Claire Boucher – revealed to Vanity Fair she and Musk recently had a baby girl via surrogacy which they’ve called Exa Dark Sideræl, or ‘Y’ for short.
This is her second baby to the SpaceX owner after the 33-year-old gave birth to their first baby, X AE A-Xii , in May 2020, and whom she and Elon call ‘X’ – there’s definitely a theme with the names.
When Did Grimes And Elon Get Together?
Grimes and Musk were first linked back in May 2018 when they first made their red carpet debut at the Met Gala. Just months later the couple weathered a feud about Musk’s friendship with Azealia Banks and even unfollowed each other on social media.
By January 2019 fans speculated they were together again after they were spotted together in China – ‘Randomly, I am in China’, the singer tweeted at the time as he launched a Tesla factory in Shanghai.
In January 2020 Grimes announced she was expecting her first baby – but, she didn’t actually announce Musk was the father until March that year.
Controversial baby names
Grimes gave birth to the pair’s first baby, X Æ A-12, in May 2020 – however, under California law meant they couldn’t register little X under that name with numerical character. Instead, they registered under the name X AE A-Xii – using the Roman numeral version of the number ’12’ and changing the character æ to AE.
For their second child Grimes and Musk used a surrogate she told Vanity Fair this ‘enabled them to keep their daughter a secret, right up until Y shared the news just now on her own’.
Their daughter, who made her debut to the world in December, has followed suit with a unique name like her sibling, and is called Exa Dark Sideræl
Grimes said her first name, Exa, was inspired by the supercomputing term exaFLOPS, which is ‘the ability to perform one quintillion floating-point operations per second’, while her second name Dark, is a nod to dark matter and ‘the unknown’.
Finally, Sideræl – which is pronounced sigh-deer-ee-el – is a ‘more elven spelling’ of sidereal, which Grimes described as ‘the true time of the universe, star time, deep space time, not our relative earth time’.
The name is also a cute nod towards the singer’s favourite Lord of the Rings character, Galadriel,
Are Grimes and Elon Musk Married?
Grimes gave a small insight to her relationship with Musk and when she was asked if they were ‘together’ she said: ‘There’s no real word for it. I would probably refer to him as my boyfriend, but we’re very fluid.’
The pair aren’t married according to the singer and they even don’t live together, but they’re happy.
She continued: ‘We live in separate houses. We’re best friends. We see each other all the time…. We just have our own thing going on, and I don’t expect other people to understand it.”
When offered the suggestion they were ‘happy’ she said: ‘Yeah, this is the best it’s ever been…. We just need to be free.”
And although there’s no plans of wedding bells she said they do plan to have more children as she added: ‘We’ve always wanted at least three or four.’
