Reading over the summer is a great way to destress and relax. You may not have as much time in the academic year to do as much reading as you like, so the summer holidays are your perfect time to catch up on what you have missed or find some new reads that interest you.
Below are some of my most highly recommended summer reads.
Of course, everyone has their own individual tastes and favourite genres. However, these range between many different styles. So hopefully below is a book that might take your fancy and could be your summer pick.
This is Going to Hurt
This is a book that documents the internal thoughts of a junior doctor. Written by Adam Kay, and published in 2017, this is a non-fiction book.
It documents the secret diaries of the doctor and the turbulent life that he faces.
There are comedic stories that will have you laughing, yet also heart-breaking ones with serious situations that he then has to face.
This book was recently adapted into a BBC drama. However, reading this will have you glued to the pages. I would highly recommend this read.
Little Women
This book was originally published in 1868. The author is Louisa May Alcott, and the story is about a group of sisters who are coming of age, and the experiences that they encounter.
This all-time classic is a really enjoyable read, and perfect for summer evenings. There is humour in this book yet also tragedy. However, the simplistic and enjoyable storyline will make you fly through this book quickly.
Where the Crawdads Sing
This is a book about an abandoned girl who raises herself in the marshlands of North Carolina.
She then opens herself up to two young men in this new type of world. However, as one of them is found dead ‘the Marsh Girl’ is immediately suspected.
This is a story about the case and the reveal of many unknown secrets.
This book was published in 2018 and is being highly discussed. I would definitely recommend reading this over the summer, as this year they are releasing the film adaptation. This story will have you on the edge of your seat.
