When you move away from home the first time and you’re used to your family home cooked meals, it can be daunting to have to fend for yourself. There’s the stereotype that students are rubbish when it comes to food but these recipe books will have you cooking up a storm in no time. Here are the best cookbooks for students.
Nosh for Students by Joy May
Nosh for Students is my personal favourite, especially for first year students. It’s perfect for those who have never used an oven in their lives (which is more people than you’d think). As well as loads of easy recipes including meals that taste like something your mum would cook and cheap takeaway recreations, it has lots of handy tips. Every student needs a guide to portioning pasta and everything is measured by cup so no need for scales.

The Hungry Student by Charlotte Pike
With over 150 easy and cheap recipes for students, this is another great book with plenty to choose from. Whether you want a simple dinner, a quick lunch between lectures, exam fuel or a slap-up meal to impress housemates, these easy-to-follow recipes are designed specially for students and include all your favourites: from homemade curries, lasagne, fajitas and toad-in-the-hole, to delicious ideas for soups, casseroles, jacket potatoes and homemade dips. Plus great morning-after breakfasts and simple but knockout desserts such as banoffee pie and Baileys cheesecake. There are also photographs to show what you’re aiming for.

Simple One Pan Wonders by Jamie Oliver
While this isn’t made particularly for students like the others, this is a great recipe book for easy one pan dishes so you don’t have to mess around. Jamie Oliver will guide you through over 120 recipes for tasty, fuss-free and satisfying dishes cooked in just one pan. What’s better: each recipe has just eight ingredients or fewer, meaning minimal prep (and washing up) and offering maximum convenience.

The Quick Roasting Tin by Rukmini Iyer
Again, this is not made specially for students but it fits into the student lifestyle very well. All meals take just 10 minutes to prep, and no longer than 30 minutes in the oven. Just chop a few ingredients, pop them into a roasting tin, and kick back while the oven does the work. This book is perfect for anyone who wants fresh, delicious, hassle-free food and minimal washing up.
The best cookbooks for students should give everyone the skills they need to impress their housemates, and delight their taste buds.
