Student accommodation at both Warwick and Birmingham University have completed their transformations for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
They will host athletes from all over the world, with facilities on offer to help ensure ideal preparation. Initially, there were plans for a £500 million athlete’s village in Perry Barr.
However, the organisers scrapped these plans, citing delays due to the pandemic as the reason. As a result, they decided three sites throughout the West Midlands would play host to those competing.
With first-year students back home for the summer, work began on making both university’s accommodations fit for purpose. With the Games just days away, the organisers have added the final touches, with the villages ready for Birmingham 2022.
What Can Athletes Expect in the Villages?
The villages have undergone a lot of change following the departure of students as late as early July. Halls will be welcoming world-class athletes, in place of drunken freshers armed with a post-night out kebab. Even the duvet covers are Commonwealth-branded.
However, the rooms are only the beginning. The organisers of the Games have ensured there are lots for the athletes to do during their time in the village. This applies to both preparation for their events, and activities so they can enjoy some downtime. There is a gym full of state of the art equipment, as well as several medical centres, including a dentist.
For those looking for something to take their mind off competition, there is an entertainment hub, which includes table football, table tennis, and big screens to show the Games. Better still, the fun doesn’t end there! Throughout the duration of the Games, events will be put on for the athletes to alleivate any boredom. These will range from guitar sessions, to dance performances, and even visits from security puppies.
Fuel for the Athletes
In addition to this, there is a big dining area for the athletes to ensure they are well-fed ahead of their events. With over 5000 athletes expected from 72 nations, it is important to cater to everyone. This certainly will be the case in the villages. According to the Birmingham Mail, the athletes can choose from sections including ‘pasta, eggs, live grill’ and many more. Street food will also be on offer for those competing.
Instantly feeling at home
The village will become home for the duration of the Commonwealth Games for those staying there. This not only includes athletes, but also officials, coaches, and volunteers. To ensure peak performance, the athletes will want to make sure the village feels like home. Upon arrival, a welcome ceremony will greet those staying in the villages, with the aim of making sure they feel settled in the West Midlands. Athlete welfare is paramount to those in charge of the Games. Within each of the villages is a ‘Pride House’ tent, which offers the athletes a safe space during their stay.
As the Games edges ever-closer, it feels like the City of Birmingham is ready for the challenge. This is reflected in the attitude of Ashwin Lokare, Heads of Games Family Services. He told BBC Radio West Midlands that his team ‘can’t wait to start meeting athletes.’
