Johnson faced a leadership challenge as a non-confidence vote took place on June 6, 2022. While he won with a clear victory of 211 votes to 148 this was a major turning point for the Prime Minister. From this point, ministers have announced that they can no longer stand by the PM, with his failure to handle the recent Chris Pincher allegations being the final straw.
Within the last week, 59 MPs have resigned from various roles within government, including some of the PM’s most loyal advisors. After a complete cabinet reshuffle and after vowing to remain as PM just the day before, Johnson has now resigned as PM, announcing this to the nation outside of Number 10 Downing Street, at 12:30pm today, July 7.
In his statement, the PM bowed out, stating: ‘I want you to know how sad I am to be giving up the best job in the world.’
Many will praise the PM for his resilience whilst others will play the blame game, but no matter your views on Johnson it is clear that the UK government is at the weakest it has been for a while with its future being one of great uncertainty.
