The time has finally come for the BUCS Sailing: Team Sailing Championship to be decided. Qualifying for this event started way back in late January. Six regional qualifiers offered the first opportunity for universities to book their place in the final. The qualifiers were split as the following: Eastern, Midlands, Northern, Scottish, Southern and Western. However, those who were not successful the first time round were given a second chance. The sailing action on 5 and 6 March was described as ‘cracking,’ with 20 teams vying for the last six spots at the final.
Thus, the final line-up for the weekend has been decided, meaning there is nothing left but the sailing itself. All the hard work and preparations by each team all come down to this championships. Not only are BUCS points on the line for their universities, but also the pride of being awarded a BUCS medal. Freshered has all you need to know ahead of the event, include a complete list of all those competing.

How does the Team Sailing Championship work?
Team sailing racing is a test of teamwork, and to be successful, every member of your side is required to pull their weight. Teams are made up of six personnel, with at least two males, and two females. The teams are then split into three lots of two, with each of these pairs going assigned a boat. Then, it comes down to the racing part. Two universities will race around a course with their all three of their teams, meaning there will be six boats involved in each race. At the finish line, the first placed team is awarded one point, second place two points, and so on down to sixth place. Each university’s three scores are added together, with the institution with the lower combined total awarded the win. The races do not last very long, but certainly provide a lot of entertainment.
