With the cost of living rising, brewing your own iced coffee at home is an easy way to cut back on cafe costs and still enjoy quality coffee tailored to your tastes this summer. These coffee methods are all cafe quality, easy to learn, and they don’t require a coffee machine. Shake your coffee up with a sprinkle of brown sugar, some hot chocolate powder or caramel syrup for an enhanced sweet beverage.

Use a Cafetière to Whip up a Cold Brew

Although it requires a little planning ahead, cafetière cold brew coffee is quick in the mornings and has a full and intense flavour. You can pick up a decent cafetière for just £4 in Poundland, which works well, unless your housemate drops it…not that I’m bitter.

For cold brew I recommend using a Colombian ground coffee; the Alcafe one from Aldi is cheap yet rich and chocolatey. Simply add a couple of dessert spoons or so of ground coffee to your cafetière, depending on how strong you fancy it. boil your water in the kettle, leave it to sit for a few minutes so you don’t scald your coffee before pouring it into the cafetière and stirring.

Once the coffee has cooled place it in the fridge and leave it overnight. Remember to fill and freeze an ice cube tray. In the morning, slowly press the plunger down on your coffee. Fill a glass with ice, top with the filtered coffee and add the milk of your choice. Mason jars are the perfect way to store cold brew if you wish to batch make it for the week.

Moka Pot Espresso Over Ice

The moka pot is my go-to method for a speedy and creamy iced coffee. You can buy one for around £10 on Amazon, and in my experience, the cheaper ones are just as effective as their pricier branded counterparts. Again, I stand by Alcafe for a tasty moka pot coffee, and tend to use the French or Italian blend here.

Simply add water to the base of your moka pot until it is half full, or half empty. Pop the filter tray on top and fill with ground coffee before screwing on the head of the moka pot tightly. Place the moka pot on the stove and turn the flame to a low heat. Wait for the water to brew up through the coffee and bubble out of the spout. This usually takes a couple of minutes so keep lifting the lid to check on your coffee so it doesn’t burn; it is also a satisfying process to watch. You should be left with a bubbly espresso shot. Pour over ice and add some milk and it’s ready to drink.

Dalgona Coffee

If you have found an instant coffee you swear by, the TikTok famous Dalgona coffee, or frothed coffee could satisfy your caffeine cravings. Simply whisk together equal parts sugar, instant coffee and boiling water until you have a thick and frothy light brown mixture. This may take some patience and grit; especially with a hand whisk. Once you have formed the right consistency, pour over ice and milk and stir up into a sweet and thick iced coffee.
