We Shouldn’t Use Astrology To Justify Our Behaviour

We all know Gen-Z are obsessed with the zodiac, what it means about them and who they’re compatible with, but when does the trend go too far? While it’s fun to tag your friends in TikTok’s about what type of cheese you are based on your star sign, it can be confusing when people use it as an excuse for their behaviour.

Don’t cheat on your boyfriend and then just claim it’s because mercury is in retrograde. That’s definitely not okay. Sorry to break it to you but, most of the time, it’s actually down to your own actions, not the “Scorpio in you.”

Can you imagine being in court for a crime and telling the judge, “Sorry, it’s because I’m such  a Capricorn!” Is this the way this world is headed?

Astrology memes and posts tend to be mostly positive, so it’s easy to see why people love them. Experts say it can give people a sense of validation, as well as being something to relate to. However, it can become an issue when people become reliant on it.

Don’t get me wrong, I think they’re fun and I enjoy reading my horoscope. People that are really passionate about astrology should definitely keep doing what they’re doing and educating us about the things we don’t understand. A lot of people believe the downfall has come from it becoming “trendy” without people doing the proper research.

With the trend comes TikTok tarot readings. I sometimes can’t scroll through my For You Page without being met by someone wanting to predict my future on livestream. It’s become so accessible which is both good and bad. It’s good that so many people have this new hobby and are interested in it, although of course this does come with it’s issues. Can a tarot reading really apply to the 50k people that watch the video?

It’s even gone as far as being used to pre-judge people: “Oh, your friend is an Aries? We won’t get on then.” Like, what?? Maybe don’t make an assumption about people based on their date of birth, you’ll miss out on some really amazing people.

There is validity to astrology, it’s a subject that’s studied widely by experts and it does affect our lives. The trendiness and casualisation of it has unfortunately led to it being tarnished with a bad reputation. While I love a good meme, let’s own up to our mistakes and not blame it on the stars.
