The US Supreme Court officially overturned Roe v Wade and with it a person’s liberty to choose to have an abortion, but some celebrities are speaking out against it.
On 24 June, the Supreme Court overturned the 1973 landmark decision meaning for millions of American women will not have the right to choose to have an abortion – it will be up to each state to decide if abortion will be legal.
The decision has shocked the world as this is a huge step backwards for women’s rights. A number of celebrities have spoken out about their own personal experiences and why it’s so important that women have access to healthcare such as abortion.
Celebs Who Spoke Out Against Row v Wade Overturn
Olivia Rodrigo and Lily Allen
During her Glastonbury set, on June 25, Olivia Rodrigo brought out special guest Lily Allen to sing “F*ck you” and dedicated the song to the Supreme Court.
Olivia told the crowd: ‘I’m devastated and terrified and so many women and girls are going to die because of this. I wanted to dedicate this next song to the five members of the Supreme Court who showed us at the end of the day they truly don’t give a s*** about freedom.’
Phoebe Bridgers
27-year-old singer-songwriter Pheobe Bridgers opened up last year about how she’s had an abortion herself while on tour, on her Instagram stories. She talked about how important it is that everybody gets access to abortion.
At Glastonbury she got the crowd to chant “f*** the Supreme Court.’ She continued: ‘All these old motherf******s trying to tell us what to do with our f****** bodies. F*** it.”

P!nk tweeted out about the ruling saying: ‘Let’s be clear: if you believe the government belongs in a woman’s uterus, a gay person’s business or marriage, or that racism is okay – then please in the name of your Lord, never f***ing listen to my music again. And also f*** right off. We good?’
Laura Prepon
Orange is the new black star, Laura Prepon, spoke out about her own abortion experience, after finding out the fetus would not survive to full term. The replies are flooded with women thanking her for speaking up and that they have been in a similar situation.
Maya Hawke
Stranger Things actress, Maya Hawke, shared her opinion on June 28th while appearing on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.
She said: ‘Of course, wealthy people will always be able to get abortions but so many people, because of this ruling this week, will not only not be able to pursue their dreams, but actually lose their lives and be unsafe and I just wanted to say that…fuck the Supreme Court.’
Of course, there is a whole multitude of celebrities who have said this is not okay, Jessica Chastain posted on Twitter on July 4, a picture of her giving the finger with the caption: ‘Happy “Independence” Day from me and my reproductive rights.’
While Michael Moore made a whole ‘declaration’ on Twitter where he not only demanded Roe v Wade be overturned but also demanded all Republicans be ‘removed from office’.
