One of the best things about autumn is being able to cosy up with a good book. Some of the best books to start reading are the classics! There are so many classics that are set in the autumn or are perfect to read in the autumn. So, here are some of the classics worth your time.
Great Expectations by Charles Dickens
Autumn is a sign that the year is coming full circle. Great Expectations is a book that comes entirely full circle, too. It follows (near-enough), the entire life of Pip. The book has got it all. There’s graveyards, ships, prisons, and lots of iconic characters. There’s the spooky Miss Havisham, who adds a real gothic feel to the novel. It’s slightly spooky, and has several dark undertones. It’s not only a great novel for autumn, but it’s a thought-provoking one too. Dickens, known for his social commentary, offers a great view of working-class London and middle-class London. It’s a book that’ll keep you occupied all autumn.
Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen
Austen’s very own spooky story. This story follows Catherine Morland. She’s obsessed with reading ghost stories, and fancies herself as a believer in the supernatural as a result. She meets a young man named Henry Tilney. He invites her to stay at his family estate, Northanger Abbey. Catherine finds herself in the company of Henry’s dad. Henry’s mother died, and Catherine begins to suspect the father of murder. It’s a funny, lighthearted Austen read. Perfect for autumn, there’s spook buildings and ghost stories galore. Bound to get you feeling autumnal!
Peter Pan by J. M. Barrie
A nice bit of escapism if you’re looking to forget about the change of seasons. Not everyone loves the change from summer to autumn, so, read Peter Pan! It may be a children’s book, but it’s wholesome and sweet! A lot of the book is set at night, when Peter often visits the adorably-named Darling siblings. The dark nights certainly feel pretty autumnal. Soon, you’ll be hoping Peter Pan might visit you too!
Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë
The original spooky romance! Set in the misty and murky Dales, Catherine and Heathcliff fall in love. The book has inspired so many things in pop-culture, including the incredible Kate Bush song! If you’re not ready to give up the summer romance novels, just switch to the autumn ones. Kathy and Heathcliff are the spooky autumn couple of all of our dreams.
