Derry Girls Is Coming Back And Here's Everything You Need To Know

Molly Raby April 1, 2022

It was back in January 2018 when Derry Girls hit our TV screens and changed the game of comedy forever. If you’ve been living under a rock (in which case, I wouldn’t blame you, considering the world atm), Derry Girls follows four Irish teenage girls and an English boy named James as they grow up during the Troubles, in, you guessed it, Derry. The group frequently find themselves in sticky situations, from accidentally driving an IRA terrorist to the border to becoming local celebrities when they see a statue of the Virgin Mary crying…when it was actually a combination of loose floorboards and a dog that really needed the loo.

How many episodes are there?

If you weren’t one of the five million people that watched the first two series, don’t worry! Both of them can be found on Channel 4 catch up, and if you can’t be bothered waiting for them to download, trusty Netflix is on hand, and has the whole first series. Each series has a six, twenty-minute episodes. So you could get the whole show boxed off in one afternoon if you wanted! And let me tell you, that would be one hell of an afternoon, I promise.

Who are the Derry Girls?

If you happened to watch the very small, underground, not really talked about Netflix show ‘Bridgerton’, then you will already know Nicola Coughlan, otherwise known as Penelope Featherington, who stands as the self-labelled ‘wee lesbian’ in Derry Girls. The show also stars Saoirse-Monica Jackson, Louisa Harland, Jamie-Lee O’Donnell and Dylan Llewellyn, who will all make you cry with laughter in very different ways. A notable mention must go to Siobhan McSweeny, who you might know as host of The Great Pottery Throw Down. In this show, she plays the stern faced, sarcastic Sister Michael who arguably only became a nun for the ‘free accommodation’.

When is series 3 out?

In late 2021, star of the show Coughlan posted a polaroid picture on Instagram of herself and co-star Harland, along with two rainbow pins and the caption ‘Goodbye Derry Girls, it’s been quite a ride’. So the show has officially wrapped filming.

Channel 4 recently announced that the third and final series of Derry Girls will be aired from Tuesday 12 April 2022. So, it isn’t too long before we see our fearsome five one last time. If the previous series are anything to go by, we are in for an amazing treat and I, for one, cannot wait.
