Emma Roberts becomes the latest actor to join the star-studded ensemble for Sony’s new Spider-Man spin off Madame Web.
The 31-year-old joins Euphoria’s Sydney Sweeney in her unknown role, and Dakota Johnson as the main hero. Celeste O’Connor, Tahar Rahim and Isabela Merced are also on board.
S.J. Clarkson, who has Marvel’s ‘Jessica Jones’ and ‘The Defenders’ under her belt, is set to direct the movie. Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless are to write the screenplay.
What is the film about?
The original comics tell the story of an elderly woman with myasthenia gravis who was connected to a life support machine which looks like a spider web. However, because of her age and medical condition, Madame Web could never fight any villains, so fans are theorising that the project could twist the comics.
Fans have also been speculating that the film could be about the current Madame Web, Julia Carpenter. She is also known as Spider-Woman II and became Madame Web in the comic ‘Marvel’s Madame Web 2.0’. She was injected with a mix of spider venom and plant extract, which gave Julia powers very similar to Spider-Man.
According to Deadline, the movie ‘will be an origin story of the clairvoyant, whose psychic abilities allow her to see within the spider world’.
Will this mean another multiversal film? Anything is possible.
Sony celebrated the highest grossing film of the year in 2021 with ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’, which raked in $1.9 billion worldwide. The company also had the success of ‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage’ which generated $506 million worldwide.
When is it out?
Filming is to start on July 11 in and around Boston under the code name Claire. Meanwhile, the female dominated movie is set for theatrical release on July 7, 2023.
