It’s back! For the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic, the legendary Met Gala is back to its traditional slot of the first Monday of May. Indeed this year the event will be May 2 2022, in New York City. It has only been eight months since the last edition, but we cannot wait to see what the designers have in store this year.
What is the Met Gala?
You might have seen actors, singers and other personalities, walk up the steps of the Met (Metropolitan Museum of Art) in very grand outfits. And you’ve often wondered why?
The Met Gala has been happening since 1948. It was a way of raising money for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute that had opened at the time. The theme of each year, is in coordination with the new fashion exhibition that opens in the Museum. Each year the gala marks the opening of a new fashion exhibition.
It has been organised and presided over by Anna Wintour since 1995. Each year, it is one of the biggest nights for fashion, and for the celebrities invited. It is certainly bound to be an incredible display for another year running.
What happens?
That I cannot answer. What goes on during the Met Gala is a secret! There is a no phone policy, and therefore no social media. We assume that the guests walk the galleries, sit for dinner and that a big name personality performs. But we can’t know for sure.
What is the theme this year?
The Met Gala is famous for having extravagant themes. Having ‘themes’ started in 1978. It was The World of Balenciaga. This years theme is in correlation with last year’s theme. The theme is ‘In America: an anthology of fashion.’ It will reflect the evolution of American fashion and celebrate unsung heroes of US designs.
The exhibition (and the outfits) will reflect some of the biggest names in American fashion, like Hanson or Oscar de La Renta, but will honour the less thought about American designers.
Who is hosting?
This year, Regina King, Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds and Lin Manuel Miranda are the official co chairs of the Met Gala 2022. Tom Ford, Adam Mosseri, and Vogue’s Anna Wintour will also attend as honorary co-chairs.
Who is attending?
Another one of the well kept secrets of the Met Gala organisers. The guest list is unknown until the night before. However, the big names of the industry usually attend. Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Beyonce. Furthermore, designers and their muses usually come! Think of Marc Jacobs and Kate Moss, Karl Lagerfeld and Blake Lively.
There are usually 600 attendees every year. Those on the guest list don’t pay. However if you have a chance of attending it will cost you $30,000 and a table is around $275,000. A pricy event.
How to watch?
Last year Vogue live-streamed the event on their social media platforms. We can only assume that they will do something similar this year! Tune in on May 2nd from 5.30 pm EST (10.30pm GMT time). We can’t to see what the designers have in store this year. There have been iconic looks and we can’t wait for more to be created!
