Fans are calling the first ‘golden buzzer’ moment of this year’s Britain’s Got Talent a fix as the singer is ‘already famous’.
After a two-year hiatus the hit ITV talent show – which is hosted by Simon Cowell, Alesha Dixon, Amanda Holden and David Walliams – returned to screens last night, Saturday April 16, but fans have called out the show as a ‘fix’ when giving out its first golden buzzer.
The Golden Buzzer Moment
On the evening singer Loren Allred took to the stage and introduced herself as the vocalist behind The Greatest Showman song ‘Never Enough’ – while Allred wasn’t actually in the film she did lend her voice to the song for the soundtrack and it was overlapped by Rebecca Ferguson’s character in the 2017 film.
Having a singer stand in isn’t a new concept – it’s been done in movies for decades from High School Musical right back to the 1961 West Side Story.
Allred then went on to absolutely belt out a live version of the song and, it was incredible. So incredible Holden hopped up and slammed down the golden buzzer. Getting a golden buzzer is a one-way ticket to the show’s semi-finals.
The Buzzer Gets Backlash
But fans weren’t happy – not because Allred wasn’t good, of course she was, but because she’s an ‘already famous’ singer due to her The Greatest Showman credits.
One person asked why people were so ‘amazed’ she was talented when she was already established, while another joked about the moment Cowell said: ‘Maybe this is your moment.’ When he would already be familiar with the singer in the US especially as he called it his ‘favourite song’.
Many also pointed out her Spotify presence and its millions of streams.
People started joking they may as well just get stars like Adele and Michael Bublé on stage for their golden buzzer moments.
Who is Loren Allred?
In defence of those sceptical to her golden buzzer moment Allred is already pretty established. In 2012 she was a contestant on The Voice, where she chose Adam Levine to be her coach. She was eliminated after the first week of live playoffs, and came in at 13th place. But then in 2014 she was selected as a member of the recording ensemble for The Greatest Showman.
The film’s soundtrack topped the Billboard charts and her song ‘Never Enough’ reached number 88 on the Hot 100.
Back in 2019, she joined Michael Bublé for a duet on his Love album for the song ‘Help Me Make it Through the Night’ and just last year she joined Andrea Bocelli for some performances on his USA Tour.
