Harry Styles is no stranger to acting, having starred in major Hollywood movies such as Dunkirk and Marvel’s Eternals. In September, the Grammy award-winning singer is taking to the big screen once again, but this time, in Olivia Wilde’s Don’t Worry Darling.
On Wednesday, the Don’t Worry Darling Twitter account posted an exclusive clip showing Harry’s character, Jack, having a conversation with his wife Alice – played by Florence Pugh.
But the clip sent fans into a meltdown as they noticed something wasn’t quite right – Harry’s accent.
Fans can’t decide if Harry’s character is supposed to be British, or if he is trying to imitate an American accent…badly.
People took to Twitter to express their feelings on the clip, with some hilarious reactions.
Meanwhile others were more critical of Harry’s accent, thinking it needs some work.
Harry hails from Cheshire, and speaks with a heavy Northern accent. In the 2017 film Dunkirk, the singer speaks with his natural accent throughout the movie. However, in the 2021 Marvel Studios film Eternals, Styles plays the role of Thanos’s brother Eros, where he sports an American accent.
Again, fans felt something was off, and took to Twitter questioning the singer’s…interesting accent.
Despite the controversy around Harry’s peculiar accents, fans have jumped in to support him. One fan has suggested that his accent may sound strange due to years of travelling – which could make sense right? Especially as he lives mostly in the states now.
Harry replaces Shia
Harry Styles replaced Shia LeBouf as Jack in ‘Don’t Worry Darling’, after allegations surfaced against the 36-year-old. Director Olivia Wilde recently spoke up about her decision to fire him, putting the safety of Florence Pugh first.
‘A lot came to light after this happened that really troubled me, in terms of his behaviour. I find myself just really wishing him health and evolution because I believe in restorative justice.
‘But for our film, what we really needed was an energy that was incredibly supportive. Particularly with a movie like this, I knew that I was going to be asking Florence to be in very vulnerable situations, and my priority was making her feel safe and making her feel supported’.
Harry is also set to star in My Policeman alongside Emma Corrin and Rupert Everett later this year. While it is not yet known what accent the singer will have in that movie, it was filmed in the summer of 2021.
