Costume parties are a great way to express yourself and have a giggle with your mates over everyone’s outfits. But what if you need a five-minute DIY costume?
After all, they can also be stressful, especially if you have been invited at the last minute or only just remembered that you are supposed to be dressing up.
Let’s take a look at ten five-minute DIY costumes that you can make out of items you already have in your wardrobe and your home. No time? No worries! You can still rock up to that costume party with a fire outfit.
Salt and Pepper
Chuck on a black t-shirt and stick on a ‘P’ cut out of white paper or card. This can also work if you only have a white t-shirt as you can be salt- for this cut out an ‘S’ from black paper or card (or colour in white paper with a black pen) and stick it on. For extra effect, wrap some tin foil around your head for the top of the salt/pepper shaker.
M&M
This one is easy and can be made out of literally almost any outfit. Throw on a monochrome outfit (you can choose any colour for this but red, green, yellow or blue are the best for this), and stick the m and m logo to your front. If you don’t have time to print it off, then you can make it yourself pretty easily out of white paper or card.
Sim
This entire costume needs just one element- The Plumbob AKA the green diamond seen above the heads of Sims in the game. You can print this out (or, if you’re stuck without a printer, you can colour it yourself) and stick it onto a piece of card. Attach it to a headband, and you’re good to go.

Devil
This is a Halloween staple but can work for normal costume parties too. Wear a red outfit and if you have some devil horns pop them on. If not, cut two triangles out of red card (or white card coloured in red) and stick them onto a headband. You can also DIY a red tail.
Jellyfish
For this, all you need is a sparkly outfit, so chuck on all the colours and shimmery items you have in your wardrobe already. Then, you’re going to need a bucket hat. Cut out strips of coloured paper or tin foil and stick then onto your hat. Pop it on your head and voilà! You are a jellyfish.
Roman (toga)
If you are running late and have nothing in your wardrobe this is an easy costume that you can make with things you will already have around the house. Simply take your bedsheet (this only really works if it is white) and wrap it around you, securing it at the waist with a belt. Thrown on any gold jewellery you have, and if you have extra time you could make a wreath out of leaves from outside.
Mike Wasowski
First of all, you need a green t-shirt (the closer green to Mike Wasowski the better), then use black and white paper to make a big eye. Stick it onto your front and throw on a baseball cap and there you have it- a last-minute low-budget yet still iconic and recognisable Monsters Inc. costume.
Ghost
Yet another costume you can make out of your bedsheets- who knew they would come in so handy? This takes five-minute costumes to a whole new level. Throw a white sheet over your head, cut holes for your eyes and mouth, and off you pop.
