As Liverpool prepares to host Eurovision next year, fans are reminded of the contestants throughout the years. The competition showcases some of the best talent in Europe and many acts become world-famous after performing.

Granted, the contest has also showcased some of the cheesiest, silliest acts ever to be seen on stage. But fans love the highs and lows of the show. So why not remind yourself of some of the best acts to come out of Eurovision.

5. Daði og Gagnamagnið (Iceland, 2020)

Think About Things became one of the biggest tracks of 2020 and, after going viral on TikTok, became an anthem of lockdown. As Eurovision 2020 was cancelled due to the Covid-19 outbreak, the track couldn’t be reentered for 2021’s event. Yet the song’s quirky, upbeat lyrics and catchy tune make in an unforgettable Eurovision entry.

4. Måneskin: ZiTTI E Buoni (Italy, 2021)

Italy had a triumphant year in 2021, bringing the European Championship home and then taking the Eurovision song contest by storm. The glamorous rock and roll studded band released a pent-up energy and rage fitted to a world escaping a pandemic.

The band had a huge stage presence, especially the lead singer Damiona David. His energy infected audiences and made it impossible for Italy to lose.

3. Conchita Wurst: Rise Like a Phoenix (Austria, 2014)

Conchita Wurst became world famous after winning Eurovision in 2014. The Austrian singer and drag queen gave a powerful performance, mirroring classic Bond songs. As she accepted the Eurovision trophy she changed conversation in many European cities, bringing attention to legal restrictions surrounding LGBTQ+ rights. Wurst continues to use her fame to champion humanitarian causes.

2. Bucks Fizz: Making Your Mind Up (UK, 1981)

Making Your Mind Up is a classic Eurovision performance. The cheesy upbeat song took first place by only four points but won the hearts of Eurovision fans everywhere. The track was matched with a simple and upbeat dance routine. And might have gone a miss if it wasn’t for the unpredictable moment in which the two male members tore away the skirts of the two female members.

The song became a huge success, topping the charts in eight countries and reaching the top 10 in seven others.

1. Abba: Waterloo (Sweden, 1974)

Of course, ABBA has to take first place. Waterloo was Sweden’s winning entry in 1974 and propelled the group to global success. The catchy, danceable tune matched with eccentric 70s attire was a Eurovision masterpiece. ABBA still remains one of the most successful pop groups, loved across time and generations.
