In respect of Lesbian Visibility Week (25th April- 1 May 2022), why not remember the lesbians in film and TV who got to live happily ever after. Granted, there are only a few as ‘burying your gays’ is all too common in the industry. But, instead of yearning over dead lesbians, let’s celebrate the ones who are still alive (in the fictional universe of course). Here are five wholesome lesbian films you should check out.
But I’m A Cheerleader (1999)
Natasha Lyonne and Clea Duvall star in this satirical but heartfelt teen movie. After having an ‘Oh Sh*t i’m gay’ moment, Megan is sent to a gay- straight conversion camp by her parents. After laughable attempts to turn these kids straight, her lesbian feelings prevail. Though the film attracted a mass amount of critics, it’s one of the only happy and triumphant queer movies. The undefeated ending makes it, for me, a (not so guilty) pleasure.
Imagine Me And You (2006)
The most simplistic lesbian fantasy is falling in love with a beautiful woman with little to no complications. ‘Happy together’ by The Turtles is diegetically playing on a loop and there isn’t a sign of future problems. Imagine me and you manage to do what most films don’t. Offer lesbians a happy ending.
Carol (2015)
Carol is unlike the films mentioned so far. It’s raw, honest and guaranteed to make you cry. Carol and Therese’s love story faces complications, romantic and societal. But what is most heartwarming is their ability to overcome all obstacles. The ending will leave you emotional yet hopeful. And thankful to be born generations later.
Booksmart (2019)
Booksmart does not focus solely on romantic lesbian love. It’s a classic teen movie where two best friends, at the bottom of the high school food chain, attend a popular party. They both aim to hook up with their crushes, and one of them is a cool skater girl. It treats WLW relationships with care and curiosity. It doesn’t separate them as something ‘other’.
Saving Face (2004)
Saving Face is a refreshing romance film. It’s one of the only queer films to focus on people of colour and include masculine presenting lesbians. It doesn’t shy away from cultural traditions and concerns, but handles them gently. And (you’ll be glad to know) has a happy ending.
So there you have it: five wholesome lesbian films that should put a smile on your face this month.
