On July 8, alongside other celebs and fashion icons, Florence Pugh attended the Valentino fashion show in Rome.
The Midsommar actress turned up wearing a fuchsia pink floor length dress which had a sheer top. This prompted some controversy on social media, with many people deeming it inappropriate and some even making unwanted comments about her body.
The dress was designed by Valentino’s creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli. Pugh wrote that she was excited to wear the dress and not nervous at all.
The star hit back at the ‘vulgar’ comments with an Instagram post, where she commented on “how easy it is for men to totally destroy a woman’s body, publicly, proudly, for everyone to see.
“So many of you wanted to aggressively let me know how disappointed you were by my ‘tiny tits’, or how I should be embarrassed by being so ‘flat chested’.”
She went on to question why people are so scared of breasts. It’s true, if men can show their nipples, why can’t women?
The comments are flooded with praise such as “You are incredible” and “Yes Flo I love you.” Another says “You’re my role model.”
This criticism of women’s bodies on social media needs to come to an end. It is crazy to think that social media went into an uproar over a pair of nipples.
Pugh makes it clear that, despite the criticism of others, she is content in her body and is now happy with all the ‘flaws’ she couldn’t bear to look at when she was 14. This is an empowering message for women, especially young women, to be confident in themselves and ignore the pressures of society.
