Last week, students at Hereford College of Arts held a 12-hour knit-a-thon. The money raised helped them to attend a graduate show and the scarves made during the event will be donated to local charities.
The group hit their 12-hour target with four people knitting at any one time, with them rotating every two hours. Some knitted by hand and others used machines to knit the scarves.
The charity event took place on Thursday, February 9 at the college’s Creative Café.
Hereford students knit for charity
The Level 6s at the college are raising funds to exhibit their work at the New Designers event this summer.
During the 12 hours they made a number of scarves which will be donated to three charities local to the area: Maggs Day Centre, St Michaels Hospice, and The Living Room to ‘help people in need stay warm and to add a little joy to their day’.

Halfway through the knit-a-thon it was announced that the students had created more than 60 metres of scarf.
One student, Ivory-Mae, told the BBC: ‘What is there not to love [about knitting].’
‘I love the fact that it’s so old-school. There’s not one bit that I don’t like.’
At the end of the knit-a-thon, the students made 68 scarves for charity.
Rose Hutton, another of the students who took part, shared pictures from the event on Instagram and said: ‘Thank you so much to everyone that has donated or that came along on Thursday, we feel very proud and can’t wait to get to New Designers in June.’
What is Hereford College of Arts?
Hereford College of Arts is an art school in the West Midlands based in the county of Herefordshire.
The college ‘delivers the full range of arts education’ and offers ‘specialist creative programmes on many levels.’
Students are encouraged to engage with wider social issues, think about the potential impact of the things they made and make the work they are ‘passionate about’ to develop a ‘deep integrity’ in their own practice.
‘At HCA, the whole environment is lead by creativity,’ the website states. ‘Here, talent is always recognised and potential is never lost in the crowd. We champion our students as individuals – celebrating each person’s successes.’
