Thanks for sticking around for part two of our journey through football social media and what Twitter made of this weekend’s FA Cup quarter final action.
Southampton v Manchester City
The second all Premier League quarter final took place on the sunny south coast. And it was no surprise that despite their efforts, Southampton were unable to stop the men from the blue half of Manchester from progressing into the last four. It could’ve been very different with the score tied at 1-1 at half time. City though, showed their class in the second 45 to run out 4-1 winners.
Southampton fans may have been hoping for more from this game after they held City to a point earlier in the Premier League season. But, it was at the top end of the pitch that fans felt the frustration. AndrewC tweeted, ‘Basically me watching #SaintsFC have so many great chances today and not managing to put away any of them. Was screaming into my hand at one point, just got so frustrating. Too often Saints just try and walk the ball into the goal. Not enough shooting’. This tweet was accompanied by an amusing gif which pretty much summed up the frustration!
As for City, well they go marching on to another big occasion at Wembley. In a team full of superstars, young Enlgand starlet Phil Foden continues to grab the headlines as well as the attention of the fans. Grant summed up the mood of the fans by simply tweeting, ‘Phil foden is world class! #Foden #SOUMCI’. Foden was on the scoresheet again for the Premier League champions and is showing no sign of slowing up. For all the money the club has spent over the years it is one of their own who stands out. What a bargain!
Nottingham Forest v Liverpool
The final game of the weekend took place at the City Ground. Nottingham Forest were looking to cause an upset on home soil against high flying Liverpool. Despite putting up a stern defence for the majority of the game, they were unable to hold out for the full 90 and Liverpool squeezed through with a narrow 1-0 victory.
Forest fans were rightly so proud of their team for going toe to toe against arguably the best team in Europe right now. Justin Allen tweeted, ‘Nottingham Forest have been brilliant tonight. Liverpool so lucky to pinch that. I have been boring everyone who knows me about how good a manager Steve Cooper is. He is a Prem manager in waiting’. Attention will turn back to the league following this, but Forest fans are unlikely to forget this great run in this season’s cup.
Liverpool fans on the other hand feel that their team is just getting started. With the Carabao cup already sealed the team look handily placed to fight for the Premier League, Champions League and now the FA Cup. An enticing semi final awaites against Manchester City in a game which simply sells itself. Liverpool fans seemingly fear no one and social media reflects that. ‘Get in, Reds! Quadruple still on and into the semi-final against Man City!’ was the verdict from Jim Nichol Turner. Could the reds really do the impossible and win the lot? Only time will tell.
