After a year’s absence as a result of the pandemic, BUCS made its’ long overdue return for the 21/22 academic year. With the sport taking a break due to the Christmas period, now is a good as a time as any to take stock of the events thus far. Enough games have been played for league tables to begin to take shape. Promotion and relegation will certainly be on team’s minds when they return to play. If, like me, you are a university student with a passion for sport, you’re probably curious as to how your university is faring thus far. University College London
The first women’s football team are enjoying a successful start to their campaign in the South Eastern 2B league, where they are sat joint top. They have picked up 15 points from 6 games, and will start to believe that this just might be their season to earn promotion to Tier 1. In hockey, the women’s first team are having something of a nightmare season. They are joint bottom of the Premier South, without a point all season. If this trend continues, they are in danger of dropping out of the Premier Tier. In Ultimate (Frisbee) news, the men’s team sit third in South Eastern 1A, with one win from three games.
University of Manchester
A perfect start for the women’s basketball first team impressively still remains in tact after six games. Their closest rival, Liverpool, have played one more game and earned three less points. Thus, promotion is firmly in their control. In netball, the women’s fourth team sit top of the EY Northern Tier 4. Another season in the Northern Tier 1A looks all but certain for the men’s first table tennis team, with their three points meaning they trail leaders Durham by 12 points.
Coventry University
One win and one loss after two games makes for an indifferent start to Coventry’s American Football campaign. They currently sit in 4th in the Midlands 1A Tier, with the two teams above on the same number of points. The same record after the same amount of games is applicable to the women’s hockey first team in the ICG Women’s Midlands Tier 4. They will be hoping they can use their games in hand to move up the table. In volleyball, the men’s first team sit in fourth with one win after four games. They are fortunately propped up the table by Leicester and Staffordshire, who share the unwanted record of zero points after four matches.
University of Leeds
In the Women’s Rugby Union Northern Tier 1, Leeds first team are storming the league. They have won six games out of six, and are a whole 13 points clear of the team in second. With 222 points scored, promotion is as good as guaranteed at this point. Conicidentally, another Leeds Women’s first team has a perfect record. The netball team has earned victory in each of their seven games, and sit top of the EY Northern Tier 1. There is a three point gap to second placed Newcastle. In men’s badmintion, the third team sit top of the Northern Tier 4, winning four of their five games.
Nottingham Trent University
In rugby league, the university currently tops one men’s league, and one women’s league. In the Men’s Midlands Tier 5, the sixth team are top with five wins in six matches. However, they are yet to face the Loughborough 5’s, who have won all four of their games, scoring an average of 97 (yes, ninety-seven) points a game. The women’s first team are top of the Midlands Tier 2, having won all five of their matches this season. Promotion seems certain, given they are 13 points clear of Birmingham 2’s in second. In men’s fencing, the first team are locked level on 12 points with bitter rivals Nottingham in the Midlands Tier 2B, with both sides boasting four wins from four.
