University is a great stepping stone from college to full time work. It trains you up for a career path and teaches you a lot of valuable skills. However it seems that, today, a university degree just isn’t enough. Many job adverts mention that experience in a relevant field is desirable, or even a requirement.
Without experience outside of university you may find yourself at the bottom of the employability pit. While this can sometimes be difficult when still at university, there are still a few ways to source it.
Careers Officer
Most universities, or even sometimes specific university departments, have their own careers or employability officer. Set up a meeting with them as they will often have plenty of industry connections and will be able to help you source some experience. They are also great to chat to if you are still unsure of your exact career path.
Reach Out
Do your research and find local companies in your field, whether that be accountants, lawyers or media outlets. Take a look at the ‘Contact Us’ page and send them an email or quick phone call to see if they would be willing to offer any work experience placements. It may just be a day or week long placement, but any experience counts!

Check Careers Websites
Sometimes companies may offer work experience placements or unpaid internships on sites such as LinkedIn or Indeed. Whilst unpaid internships can be difficult to manage with your other commitments, you may be able to take part in them during breaks at university and they can sometimes lead to being employed after graduation.
Join Societies
Depending on your career path, your university might have societies that you can join to boost your experience and skills. For example aspiring journalists can join the university newspaper, or wannabe politicians can join the debate club. Even if you can’t get direct experience in your field by joining your course society, taking an interest in your career path outside of your studies will make you appear keen and motivated on your CV.
Part Time Work
Even if it isn’t related to your career path, any experience is good experience. A part time job in hospitality or retail will show that you have skills such as time management, team work, good communication and attention to detail. This will bulk out your CV while you find experience in your desired field, and make you some money along the way.
