How To Half-Swipe On Snapchat

Are you someone who turns read receipts off? Do you sometimes want to read a message without feeling obligated to respond right away? If that’s the case, using Snapchat’s half-swipe option could come in handy for you. Many Snapchat users open snaps fully without realising that it’s not the only way to see the message. Like the app’s lock icon, it can be confusing. Here is everything you need to know about half-swiping including how it works, how to troubleshoot, and why it can come in handy.

What Is Half-Swiping On Snapchat?

Half-swiping is where you open a message only partially. Normally, if you were going to read a message, you would swipe all the way. Once you’ve done so, the app marks the message as read. From that point on, the person who sent the message will be able to see that you’ve seen it. With half-swiping, however, you only open the message partially — enough to read it, but without fully opening it. With half-swiping, the sender of the message won’t be able to see that you’ve read it.

There are many situations where half-swiping can come in handy. If someone has seen that you’ve opened a message, you might feel a need to respond right away. However, there are many circumstances where you might not want to do this. You might not have the social energy to reply, you might want to check just in case it’s urgent, or you might just be plain busy.

How To Half-Swipe

Half-swiping is pretty simple once you learn how to do it. All you have to do is open the app and then go to the chats menu indicated by the speech bubble at the bottom of your screen. Then, choose which unread message you want to half-swipe on. Drag your finger from left to right over that chat as if you were going to open it normally. Hold your finger in place before it goes all the way to the right, and then read the message. When you’re done reading, move your finger back to the left side of the screen, and the message will remain unopened.

What To Do If Half-Swiping Doesn’t Work

There are a couple of reasons why half-swiping might not work. The first could be an error in technique. In order to half-swipe properly, you have to ensure that you’re not dragging the message too far, otherwise it could open. Another reason it might not work is due to the app itself. You can try closing and reopening the app, or if that doesn’t work, double check to make sure that the app doesn’t need an update.
