Following her appearance at the Oscars, some people on Twitter wondered if Billie Eilish was pregnant. The tweets prompted articles that, like so many before them, have shot down the rumours while using the very question for hits. The irony is, the clothes the singer wears to protect her body from scrutiny are the same ones that cause some to go to extremes.
Eilish wore a flowing Gucci dress on Sunday. Like so many of her outfits, it was anything but figure-hugging. So what did some people do? They jumped straight online suggesting that the 20-year-old is expecting her first child.
A regular rumour
This isn’t the first time Eilish has been the subject of that rumour. Back in 2018, Eilish told Vanity Fair that her fashion choices often led to false pregnancy rumours.
Then, in 2021, photoshopped images of the singer with a baby bump were posted on Twitter. Around the same time, false headlines claiming Eilish had actually given birth briefly did the rounds on Snapchat.
The truth is, it’s lazy to see someone in baggy clothes and automatically think they are hiding something. Sometimes, that is simply what they feel comfortable in.
Celebrities are often regarded as fair game when it comes to click-bait and unsubstantiated gossip. But it’s time people stopped throwing the pregnancy rumour at Eilish. Let’s face it, if nothing changes, the same story will do the rounds every few months.
It’s embarrassing for the people who don’t know what Eilish stands for, as she has mentioned numerous times in the past.
Why does Billie Eilish wear baggy clothes?
As reported by Seventeen, Eilish explained her fashion choices during a Calvin Klein campaign.
“That’s why I wear baggy clothes,” she said. “Nobody can have an opinion because they haven’t seen what’s underneath. Nobody can be like ‘She’s slim-thick,’ ‘she’s not slim-thick’, ‘she’s got a flat a*s’, ‘she’s got a fat a*s’. No one can say any of that because they don’t know.”
The problem is, even when people don’t know, it doesn’t stop them talking.
Eilish has made it incredibly clear that she doesn’t want her body to be a topic of conversation. Since she first burst onto the scene with the phenomenal 2017 EP Don’t Smile At Me, the singer has let her music do the talking.
The newly-crowned Oscar winner is halfway towards the fabled EGOT. She will let the world know if she does ever become pregnant. It is not for the media – or Twitter users – to convince the world of a story that simply isn’t true.
How about, the next time Billie Eilish – or anyone for that matter – is snapped on the red carpet, we simply celebrate what we know about them.
