If you’ve been active on social media over the past week, particularly in the world of fashion, you will have seen Kylie Jenner’s latest controversy: the lion head dress. It has got people talking and divided opinion on social media. But some feel Kylie Jenner actually wanted to raise awareness with her latest fashion choice.

What happened?

Kylie Jenner arrived at Shiaparelli’s Fashion Week Show on January 23 wearing a black dress. However, this wasn’t any old black dress. The dress was sporting a huge and realistic looking lion’s head across her chest. It was more than enough to turn heads.

The wacky dress was a part of the show’s theme of fake taxidermy. There were other lifelike heads of animals worn, across a variety of different dresses. One model wore a snow leopard head on her dress and another wore a black panther’s.

What’s the controversy?

While the collection definitely had the shock factor, something Schiaparelli is known for, it was a bit too much for some people.

It is important to note that none of it was real and no animals were harmed. However, the animal heads were so realistic that a lot of people complained that they glorified trophy-hunting.

What is trophy hunting?

Trophy hunting is a form of hunting for sport in which parts of the hunted wild animals are kept and displayed as trophies. Some users took to Twitter to express their disgust at the show.

World Animal Protection US even came forward to condemn the dresses.

However, PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, are on the other side of the fence.

They said: “Kylie’s look celebrates lions’ beauty and may be a statement against trophy hunting, in which lion families are torn apart to satisfy human egotism.”

So could Kylie Jenner actually be trying to raise awareness with her latest outfit. That may well be the case. Although events, and choices, like this are always going to be divisive.
