San Diego Comic Con (SDCC) took place last week, and eager fans were keeping their eyes peeled for announcements from their favourite shows and franchises as they take to the panels.
Marvel Studios returned to Comic Con’s Hall H, with a ridiculous amount of content to blow fans’ minds. The Marvel panel took place on July 23, where the studio teased fans with sneak peaks and trailers of upcoming releases – and even gave fans an insight into phases five and six.
The studios also introduced fans to the ‘Multiverse Saga’. This is the second saga of the MCU, following on from the previous ‘Infinity Saga’.
What has been announced?
Agatha: Coven of Chaos
Previously titled ‘Agatha: House of Harkness’, the studios revealed the new name ‘Agatha: Coven of Chaos’ at SDCC. The series will follow on from ‘WandaVision’ and will focus on Agatha Harkness, the main antagonist from the show. Agatha practiced dark magic during the Salem witch trials and is therefore drawn to the power of the Scarlet Witch.
While we don’t know the plot of the series yet, the ‘coven’ in the title could give away that the show may be a prequel to her time on ‘WandaVision’. The series could follow her time in Salem with her coven, as we saw a glimpse of in ‘WandaVision’ episode eight.
‘Agatha: Coven of Chaos’ arrives on Disney+ in Winter 2023.
Wakanda Forever
Those in the audience at SDCC were the first to see the official teaser trailer of ‘Wakanda Forever’, the sequel to ‘Black Panther’. Letitia Wright is reprising her role as Shuri, along with Lupita Nyong’o as Nakia. Tears were shed on stage as cast mates spoke about the legacy of Chadwick Boseman.
The film introduces Tenoch Huerta as anti-hero Namor McKenzie, which was widely speculated up until SDCC. Marvel stated that they would not be recasting the role as T’Challa. However the last scene of the trailer shows panther claws – has the suit gone to Shuri?
The film will close phase four and premiere in theatres November 11, 2022.
Captain America: New World Order
While it was already confirmed that Sam Wilson would be getting his own Captain America film, we didn’t have much information on it. The movie is now confirmed to be titled ‘Captain America: New World Order’ and will feature in phase five.
While we still don’t know when the film will start production, ‘Captain America: New World Order’ will hit the big screens on May 3, 2024.
Loki Season 2
Yes, the God of Mischief will return once again.
The second season of ‘Loki’ was confirmed a while back and shooting is currently taking place in London. SDCC finally gave us a release date and some more information on the highly anticipated series. Tom Hiddleston will be returning, as well as Sophia Di Martino and Owen Wilson.
The crowd in Hall H cheered as Kevin Feige (sporting a Miss Minutes Hat), announced that Loki season two will be streaming on Disney+ in Summer 2023.
Daredevil: Born Again
Charlie Cox will be returning to play Daredevil in his own series on Disney+. Kevin Feige confirmed that the series will be a part of phase 5, and will feature 18 episodes – unlike Marvel’s usual 6. The series will be in the MCU and will also star Vincent D’Onofrio as Kingpin.
The series will begin streaming on Disney+ in Spring 2024.
Ant-Man and The Wasp Quantumania
Marvel gave fans in the crowd a premiere of the trailer of the trailer, which showed Kang The Conqueror – who we saw a variant of in Loki (Jonathan Majors). The film will officially kick off phase 5 of the MCU, and will build up Kang’s storyline for ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty’.
‘Ant-Man and The Wasp Quantumania’ is set to star Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lily, Bill Murray, Michael Douglas and Michelle Pfeiffer. The film finds the Ant-Man and the Wasp adventuring through the quantum realm, interacting with strange and new creatures. The movie even sees Scott Lang’s daughter Cassie getting her own suit to travel through the quantum realm.
‘Ant-Man and The Wasp Quantumania’ is the third of the Ant-Man films, and is set to release February 17, 2023.
Blade
The ‘Blade’ reboot was first announced in 2019, and fans have been eager for more information ever since. The SDCC panel revealed that the film is set to begin shooting this October, with Bassam Tariq directing.
The film is set for a release date of November 2023.
Secret Invasion
Fans at SDCC got to see a trailer for the highly anticipated show, which sees Nick Fury leaving a spaceship and meeting Maria Hill at a bar. Hill has tried to contact Fury many times in the past, and explains that she has been avoiding Earth for many years, Fury says ‘this situation’ needs his attention.
The series sees Earth dealing with shapeshifting Skrulls, as we saw in ‘Captain Marvel’. Talos and Fury team up in a bid to stop the secret skrull invasion. Samuel L. Jackson will reprise his role as Nick Fury, and Ben Mendelsohn will return to play Talos the skrull.
The series is also confirmed to star Colbie Smaulders, Don Cheadle, Emilia Clarke and Olivia Coleman. ‘Secret Invasion’ will hit Disney+ in Spring 2023.
Echo
The series will follow on from the events in ‘Hawkeye’ and will centre around Maya Lopez. ‘Echo’ will see Maya as she disrupts New York City, her hometown. The series is set to star Vincent D’Onofrio as Kingpin and Charlie Cox as Daredevil.
The original series will be streaming on Disney+ in Summer 2023.
Thunderbolts
‘Thunderbolts’ will be the film to close phase five of the MCU, and is set to create a team of anti-heroes/supervillains that could change the MCU forever. Characters that could be involved are: Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, Yelena Belova, Baron Zemo, John Walker and Taskmaster.
Considering John Walker and Yelena Belova are already under the wing of Valentina, we don’t think it’s a crazy assumption to make.
The film is set to arrive in cinemas July 26, 2024.
Fantastic Four
‘Fantastic Four’ will begin phase six of the MCU. We got a glimpse of ‘Fantastic Four’ within the MCU, when John Krasinski played the role of Reed Richards in ‘Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness’.
It is not yet known who is going to be cast, but the film is aiming for a cinematic release of November 8, 2024.
Avengers: The Kang Dynasty
Kang is set to be the big-bad throughout phases five and six, where the newest heroes will assemble to fight. ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty’ is set for a May 2, 2025 release.
Avengers: Secret Wars
Part of phase six, ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ is expected to be the ‘Endgame’ of the two films. Both movies are being released in one year, and the studios haven’t released many details in terms of plot. ‘Secret Wars’ is set for a November 7, 2025 release.
