Actress, advocate and all round icon Laverne Cox can now add being made into a doll onto her ever-growing list of achievements.
Who is Laverne Cox?
Cox rose to fame around 2013 when she played Sophia Burset on Netflix’s Orange Is The New Black. In 2017 she was Emmy nominated for ‘Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series’ in the show, making her the first transgender person to be nominated for a Primetime Emmy award in an acting category.
In 2015, Cox won a Daytime Emmy Award for being Executive Producer on Laverne Cox Presents: The T Word. This award made her the first transgender woman to win a Daytime Emmy. The award also made her show, The T Word, the first transgender documentary to win such an award.
Cox has a TV and film resume that spans almost two decades. Alongside her acting career, Cox has been very outspoken about transgender and LGBTQ+ issues.
Cox’s Barbie doll
Cox seems to be blazing the way for the trans and queer community, being the first trans person to do an array of things. And she has done it again!
In celebration of her 50th birthday, Laverne Cox has been honoured with a Tribute Collection Barbie doll. This is the first time a Barbie has ever been modelled after a trans person.
The doll wears ‘a triple-threat original design, featuring a deep red tulle gown gracefully draped over a dazzling, silver metallic bodysuit. Her hair is swept into glamorous Hollywood waves while dramatic makeup completes her look.’
In a statement made to Today, Cox said, ‘It’s been a dream for years to work with Barbie to create my own doll’.
She added ‘I can’t wait for fans to find my doll on shelves and have the opportunity to add a Barbie doll modeled after a transgender person to their collection.’
