An I am Legend sequel has been announced and Will Smith is confirmed to return with Michael B Jordan joining him.

According to Deadline the two film stars are coming together for the first time on the big screen to star in and produce the sequel to the 2007 movie.

53-year-old Smith took to Instagram to tease news of the project by sharing a post-apocalyptic I am Legend-style image and tagged Jordan in it.

The original film starred Smith in a nearly deserted post-apocalyptic New York City filled with zombie-type creatures.

A tale of two endings

The question on everyone’s mind, who saw the film in cinemas, is (spoiler) didn’t Will Smith’s character die at the end? Making him the ‘legend’ for sacrificing himself?

We won’t know the answer to that for a while as plot details are being kept under wraps.

But there has always been the lingering rumour this isn’t true as DVD (yeah, remember them?) owners might remember I am Legend had an alternate ending.

The alternative ending was said to have been closer to that in the original book the film was based on. In that ending, Smith’s character survives and realises that the zombie vampires are more intelligent than he originally thought.

It then dawns on him he’s killed so many intelligent living creatures and that means he’s seen as an evil monster to them and so he becomes an infamous legend.

Among all the speculation, one thing we do know is Oscar-winner Akiva Goldsman, who adapted Richard Matheson’s 1954 novel for the original 2007 movie, will be returning to write the follow-up and produce as well.

When it opened in 2007 the film grossed $256.4M (£193.84M) in the US and $585.4M (£442.56M) worldwide. If the original is anything to go by, the sequel has a good shot at success.

36-year-old Jordan is best known for his roles in Black Panther and the Rocky spin-off/sequels Creed and Creed II. However this will be his big screen debut with the Fresh Prince of Bel Air legend.
