We have loved thriller films for as long as we can remember. From the shower scene in Psycho to that infamous moment in Carrie, there is just something we love about sitting on the edge of our seats. However, this means that it is getting harder to release fresh takes on the saturated genre. You have to step outside of the box in times like this, and that is exactly why you need to watch Missing.
What Is Missing?
June is a typical teenager who is attached to her phone and doesn’t give a second thought to her mother, Grace, going away on holiday to Colombia with her new boyfriend. But, when her mother doesn’t come home or answer any messages, June begins to worry.
After international police seem to shrug June off, she takes things into her own hands. Using her expertise in technology, she uses everything from old email accounts to Facebook stalking to try to track down her mother. But the further she digs, the more questions she reveals.
Missing is a new and intriguing film due to the way it is presented to the audience. Most of the plot sees June sat at her computer, so we follow the case through her online discoveries. We watch as June scrolls through emails, guesses passcodes, uses google translate, and all the other things that come with online sleuthing.
Nothing like this has ever hit our screens before, so it is no surprise that people are enjoying a new take on an old genre.
What Do Critics Think?
Missing has been widely well received among critics and the general public alike.
Awarding the film four stars, John Nugent of Empire Online writes that, while the plot may be “gimmicky”, overall, it is “a gripping, well-told, incredibly watchable thriller… [that is] consistently satisfying.”
Writing for The Guardian, Benjamin Lee has given Missing a solid three stars labelling it as “compelling… if increasingly far-fetched.” Lee says that there are “audible gasps at some of the wild twists”, enticing in new audiences who love an unexpected turn.
The general public have also taken to this film very well. This is proved on Rotten Tomatoes where Missing has a 90% audience score.
You really need to watch Missing before all the twists and turns are spoiled for you.
