Tory MP Jamie Wallis has revealed he is trans and has received a huge amount of support from colleagues rallying around him on Twitter.
The Conservative MP for Bridgend announced he is trans in an incredibly personal and emotional Twitter post that detailed his experiences of alleged rape and blackmail.
‘It’s Time’
In the post – which he started with ‘it’s time’ – Wallis revealed he’s been diagnosed with gender dysphoria adding: ‘I’ve felt this way since I was a very young child.’
The MP, who gave no indication to preferred pronouns, continued: ‘I had no intention of ever sharing this with you. I always imagined I would leave politics well before I ever said this out loud.
‘I have never lived my truth and I’m not sure how. Perhaps it starts with telling everyone.’
Wallis claimed that he had been blackmailed and ‘outed’ to his father – a situation that was dealt with by the police.
‘There was a close call in April 2020 when someone blackmailed me, outed me to my father and sent photographs to other family members,’ the MP said, ‘He wanted £50,000 to keep quiet. The police were so supportive, so understanding and on this occasion the system worked. He pled guilty and was sentenced to 2yrs and 9mnths in prison.’
Wallis then, bravely, shared his experience, in detail, of when he was allegedly raped last year, which he now suffers PTSD from.
He wrote: ‘A few months back, in September, I “hooked up” with someone who I met online and when I chose to say ‘no’ on the basis that he wouldn’t wear a condom he chose to rape me.
‘I have not been myself since this incident and I don’t think I will ever recover. It is not something you ever forget, and it is not something you ever move on from.’
Support From Colleagues
Following his honesty and devastating revelations, Wallis has received huge amounts of support from colleagues – across the board – who’ve praised him for his honesty, bravery, and courage.
