The Channel 4 hit It’s a Sin, and Netflix shows, such as Squid Game and Sex Education, have soared in this year’s BAFTA TV nominations.
The BAFTA television awards nominations dropped today, Wednesday March 30, and from It’s a Sin to In My Skin and We Are Lady Parts to Time there are dozens of shows honoured this year.
Netflix for the win
For the past few years streaming sites have found their place at award ceremonies and just coming out of a pandemic hasn’t been an exception, it would seem.
In the International Series category not one, but three Netflix shows have been nominated – Call My Agent!, Lupin, and Squid Game are all up for the award. And Netflix isn’t the only one, Amazon Prime even has a horse in the race with The Underground Railroad.
Netflix get’s another nod as Aimee Lou Wood and Ncuti Gatwa are up for ‘Female performance in a comedy programme’ and ‘male performance in a comedy programme’, respectively, for their performances in Sex Education. Alongside this Nonso Anozie is for the ‘supporting actor’ award for his performance in Sweet Tooth, which is also on the streaming site.
It’s a Sin Storms Nominations
The Russell T Davies’ hit It’s a Sin has stormed the nominations taking 11 nominations, including best mini-series, leading actor and leading actress.
Set in London from 1981 to 1991, the show follows the lives of a group of gay men and their friends who lived during the HIV/AIDs crisis in the UK and was written and created by the Queer As Folk and Doctor Who screenwriter.
The show’s 11 nominations include five in the craft categories and six in the television awards categories – Olly Alexander is up for ‘Leading Actor’, Lydia West for ‘Leading Actress’ and the show has three actors in ‘supporting actor’ with Omari Douglas, David Carlyle, and Callum Scott Howells. The awards also gave nods for Davies in the writer drama category.

Richard Ayoade, the comedian and former star of The IT Crowd, will host the Virgin Media Bafta TV Awards ceremony for the third year in a row at London’s Royal Festival Hall on 8 May. The Bafta TV Craft Awards will take place on 24 April.
