For some students having a birthday at university for the first time away from your family can be an experience of mixed emotions. When in first year, you may not feel like you have found your particular type people enough to celebrate as you usually would.

However, this does not mean that celebrations should not occur! For any student, planning something with a group of friends no matter how big or how small can leave some long lasting memories.

Whether you prefer a wild night out, or a cosy night in, or just a bottle of wine and a film, your evening can be tailored to what you want to do. Remember this is your day so do what you want to celebrate your birthday whilst at university.

Below are some of the best tips and places to go for your birthday, no matter the size of your group. You can tailor your day to what best suits your hobbies and your likes and dislikes.

An adventure or activity day out

In many cities, they have adult ‘soft play’ or adventure styled park. Whether this is going to Go Ape, or Ninja Warrior, these are days that you can book to have an athletic yet fun time with your friends. Doing something physical and out of the ordinary can make your day feel more special.

Other ideas such as crazy golf or bowling, although not as adventurous, can provide a really fun filled activity day which will take you away from your studies. This allows for you to dedicate a day of fun to yourself.

Further adventurous daytime activities to book and enjoy with friends can include Go Karting or Rock Climbing. For these adrenaline junkies this could be the perfect day out for you. However, if you are not a speed or heights person, and would rather a slower paced day, below are some more options just for you.

A nice evening out

If adventure and activity filled days are not your scene, do not worry as the with array of clubs, pubs, and restaurants I’m sure we’ll be able to tick a box for something you like.

Dressing up and going out for cocktails, enjoying a boozy brunch, or just a fancy restaurant with some friends can make for a really special day. Going to a place that you’ve never tried before but always wanted to, allows you to use your birthday as an excuse to do so.

Furthermore, going to the cinema to watch the latest blockbuster with a large popcorn and drink is also a fun and enjoyable time pass and a good birthday experience.

For those who want to take full advantage of being away from home for their birthday, a cocktail evening followed by a night out in town to go clubbing or potentially pub golf/ a pub crawl will not disappoint. If you wish to do so, take advantage of the situation of not being at home and enjoy dancing until the early morning.

Whatever you decide to do on your birthday just make sure it’s something you enjoy. You’re only this age once and this experience at university is something you can look back on and remember.

Even if this includes having a takeaway for one and reading a good book. Do what makes you happy, as after all it is your birthday celebration and no one else’s .
