For many people planning their next step, this may well be the first time they have left education and decided their own fate since the age of four. So the question is: Where to begin when it comes to your gap year?

This is an extremely exciting time to be able to explore the world and different cultures.

However, the idea of planning this year and where to begin can be a daunting feeling for many people, especially students.

Location! Location! Location!

First and foremost, deciding on the location (or locations) that you wish to visit and deciding if you will travel alone or with people is the best place to start.

This doesn’t mean that your plans cannot change; you can always add another location during your gap year on your travel experience. But having a rough guideline that you stick to can help structure your time abroad efficiently and effectively.

If you to travel with friends, it is of vital importance that you choose the right people to do this with. When you look back on this time of your life, you don’t want your experience to be clouded due to going with someone who isn’t on the same wavelength as you.

The Type of Experience you Want

Deciding whether you will have a working holiday or a gap year are important things to note. If you are having a working holiday, you need to work out issues such as working visas, to be able to fund yourself.

Various sites and travel agencies provide a guaranteed interview before you touchdown at your destination. That ensures you are working throughout this travel experience and can afford accommodation and travel excursions.

If you are using a gap year to travel without the pressures of work, then obviously ensure you have the right amount of funds before your trip.

This is important to ensure that you can safely travel to certain locations without running out of money, and providing yourself with safe accommodation.

Accommodation

Looking at reviews of accommodations, especially hostels, is crucial when planning your trip. Of course, you want the most cheap and cheerful place as many will want to be saving money and using what they do have to travel to different areas.

Looking at reviews online to ensure the safety and cleanliness of where you wish to be staying is a great way to get the best out of your trip and when booking accommodation.

As I’ve already mentioned, ensuring you get all the correct working visas in advance will make sure there will be no stress if you are able to work in certain countries.

Planning ahead is the most important factor when it comes to this. The spontaneity of a gap year and seeing where your journey takes you is of course a huge factor and can still be enjoyed.

Yet planning certain safety procedures, work, visas, accommodation, and healthcare, does not take the fun out of the gap year. On the contrary, it ensures that your planning is accurate. This is to guarantee that you have the best time and allows for your independence when travelling to really grow.

If you have been wondering where to begin your gap year, hopefully this can help get the ball rolling.
