Earlier today, clothing brand Pretty Little Thing announced that they would be partnering with Love Island star Gemma Owen. Their announcement came via their Instagram account and read: ‘IT’S OFFICIAL. Welcome to the PLT family @gemmaowen_1. We can’t wait to show everyone what we’re working on.’
This isn’t the first time that Pretty Little Thing have partnered with a Love Island star.
Almost every year the brand partners with stars of the show on new clothing ranges. In the past, Pretty Little Thing have collaborated with Love Island contestants such as Molly-Mae Hague and Montana Brown.
Fans wanted Indiyah not Gemma
Some fans have taken to Twitter to express their thoughts on the brand deal. Many users were unhappy that it was Gemma Owens that was offered a deal, as they expected that it would be contestant Indiyah Polack.
During this year’s series of the show, the Pretty Little Thing Twitter account was regularly posting images of Indiyah and tweeting about her. The account also posted a photo of both Indiyah and Gemma, asking users to retweet to vote on who should get a brand deal. Indiyah’s post received 2352 retweets, while Gemma’s only saw 185 retweets.
Some Twitter users have accused Pretty Little Thing of using Indiyah’s image for social media engagement with no intention of offering her a deal.
One user wrote: ‘If they were gonna give Gemma this deal anyway why did PLT ask the public to vote and Indiyah won the vote… just another day of brands using black people for click bait and nothing else.’
Another user expressed sympathy for Indiyah, writing: ‘This is so nasty I’m sorry they fully used Indiyah for some engagement.’
Some believe that Pretty Little Thing chose Gemma due to her famous father, professional football player Michael Owen. Another Twitter user wrote: ‘They asked the public who should get the deal and Indiyah got the most votes but they still went with Gemma? If her dad wasn’t Michael Owen…’
Neither Indiyah nor Pretty Little Thing have responded to the backlash at the time of writing.
