The early noughties hit LGBTQ+ show Queer as Folk has been ‘reimagined for 2022’ in a new Russell T Davies and Peacock reboot.

A trailer for the reboot shared by the original creator of Queer as Folk, Russell T Davies, on Instagram yesterday, Thursday April 14, giving fans a looking at the updated show or as Davies called it ‘reimagined for 2022’.

What is Queer As Folk?

Queer as Folk started life as a progressive and absolutely ‘out-there’ series by Russell T Davies for Channel 4 in the UK. It was set Manchester and the heart of the gay scene in 1999, Canal Street.

The original had two seasons and followed the story of three gay men, Stuart (played by Game of Thrones star Aidan Gillen), Vince, and Nathan (played by none other than Charlie Hunnam.

The series was then picked up in the US and ran for five seasons where the storylines were very similar in the first season, but the characters has changed. This time it was set in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and starred the Deadwood and Gray’s Anatomy star, Gale Harold, as Brian Kinney in the lead, Randy Harrison as his young lover Justin and Disney’s Lab Rats star Hal Sparks as Brian’s best friend Michael.

The show was pretty radical for the early noughties and this new series hopes to be even more so.

All We Know About The Reboot

The reboot is set to follow the lives of a diverse group of friends in New Orleans, in the US, who’s lives will be upheaved by a sudden tragedy.

The cast will include Grey’s Anatomy‘s Devin Way, who will play Brodie (he/him), a charming non-binary commitment-phobe who decides to remain in New Orleans following the tragedy.

CG, who is a non-binary actor, will play Shar (they/them), a non-binary professor making the transition from living the care-free punk life to becoming a dutiful parent. Johnny Sibilly, from Pose, will play the role of Noah (he/him), a successful lawyer putting on a facade. Jesse James Keitel will play Ruthie (she/her), a trans party girl who is still figuring out adult life (aren’t we all?) and Fin Argus will be taking on the role of Mingus (he/him/they/them), an overconfident high schooler.

Ryan O’Connell also stars as Julian (he/him) who is living with cerebral palsy, also acts as an executive producer and writer for the show.

Russell T Davies is behind this reboot alongside Stephen Dunn. Davies told Entertainment Weekly: ‘I’m very proud of what we achieved in 1999, but in queer years, that was a millennium ago! As a community, we’ve radicalised, explored, opened up, and found new worlds — with new enemies and new allies — and there was so much to be said.

‘Stephen pitched a brand new version of Queer as Folk with so much imagination, insight, and crucially, joy, that I simply couldn’t resist. I thought it was about time the title belonged to a whole new generation. The 2022 show is more diverse, more wild, more free, more angry — everything a queer show should be.’

Queer as Folk will be streaming on Peacock TV from June 9.
