The return of Derry Girls is a much anticipated one. The show documents the growth and experience that four young girls and one boy go through while at school during the Northern Ireland troubles. It is no surprise why we love Derry Girls so much. In short, it is one of the best comedies on TV.

What is the series about?

This is a very emotional and interesting time in history, yet the series focuses on the normality and humour that these students go through. It doesn’t focus on the troubles, but on the day-to-day worries and anxieties that all school children go through at a certain age.

Derry Girls is so loved due to the light-hearted comedy which is shown throughout the series against the backdrop of a very difficult and scary time in people’s lives.

Michelle, Erin, Orla, Claire, and James show the emotions that every student goes through while trying to find out who they are as a person, find love, attempt to pass their exams, and try to be who they have always wanted to be.

When do more episodes air?

The new season began on 12 April 2022 and there will be a new episode every Tuesday on Channel 4 at 9:15 PM.

Episode one showed the group of students just about to get their GCSE results. It highlighted the lengths that they would go to try to change what they thought were failed marks. Yet of course, as always, they inevitably got into more trouble – accidently assisting two men in a robbery of their school.

This resulted in them being taken away by armed police and questioned about what they were doing in the school at that time.

Eventually, through their use of their uncle’s monotone monologue, the policeman lets the group go, so as to avoid any more time listening to Colin and his stories.

Why people love this show

Derry Girls is a must-watch and a good way to brighten up an evening. Many people relate as it highlights issues many teenagers face.

However, it still comments on the deeper issues that these people are going through, and the fear that many must have felt are of course not forgotten or overshadowed. That said, a comedic spin on this dark time in history is a refreshing watch.

These are just some of the reasons why we love Derry Girls. If we’ve missed anything, pop a comment below.
