This month sees Julia Roberts team up with Hollywood big-hitter George Clooney in a classic romcom, after avoiding the genre for decades.
The two play bickering divorced parents whose daughter, Lily, left for Bali after graduating. Lily finds the love of her life out there and, when her parents receive the wedding invite, they hatch a plan to stop their daughter making the same mistake they did.
Who is in the film?
Roberts and Clooney are clearly the headline names in the movie. The duo has worked on several films together, including three installments of the Ocean’s franchise as well as the 2016 thriller Money Monster.
Lily is played by Kaitlyn Dever, who also stars alongside her Booksmart co-star Billie Lourd in Ticket To Paradise.
Gede, Lily’s soon-to-be husband is played by Maxime Bouttier. He is a French-Indonesian actor who has been in the likes of Matt & Mou as well as the romantic drama Meet Me After Sunset.
Other cast members include Lucas Bravo (Emily in Paris), Murran Kain (The Monster Within), Sean Lynch (Hacksaw Ridge) and Rowan Chapman (The Curious Case of Dolphin Bay).
Reviews
Ticket To Paradise has recieved mixed reviews after its release. Many critics are hailing Roberts and Clooney for their part in the film, which makes it slightly better than it otherwise would have been.
Xan Brooks for The Guardian awards the film two stars. He argues that the film wants to be ‘an old-school Hollywood screwball’ but ultimately Brooks describes it as ’the filmic equivalent of plastic figurines on a cake’.
Brian Lloyd, writing for Entertainment.ie, gives Ticket To Paradise three stars and says that ‘people who love old-school romantic comedies will love this because it’s very much that with two titans of the genre’. However, ‘anyone’s who’s remotely incredulous won’t be able to take it on.’
Despite an overarching negative review, the audience rating on the article is 64% in favour of the film.
Digital Spy writes that Ticket To Paradise ‘feels like it could have come direct from the ’90’s.’ While calling the film ‘predictable’ and ‘dated’, they do applaud the lead actors.
‘[Roberts and Clooney’s] charisma and chemistry lifts the flat script.’
