As Meg Ryan prepares to return to the big screen in her first rom-com in over a decade, we take a look at some other new or upcoming films by the queens of romance. JLo, Sandra Bullock and others have taken the world of rom-coms by storm for decades. All are making a comeback as they try to change the image of rom-coms from something other than a cliché Netflix original, and back into well-loved classics.
JLo in Marry Me
Latin superstar Kat Valdez decides to marry an audience member at a concert after she learns of her fiancé’s cheating ways before her live performance. A classic J-lo story that stars Owen Wilson as her new love interest. Available on Peacock.
Julia Roberts in Ticket To Paradise
Starring alongside George Clooney for the fourth time, this rom-com set in Bali will follow two parents as they try to stop their daughter rushing into marriage. It will also star Kaitlyn Dever from Booksmart and Lucas Bravo from Emily in Paris – a great cohort of stars. The film will be in cinemas in October.
Anne Hathaway in Locked Down
Very on brand for COVID, this rom-com crossed with a pandemic and a heist tells the story of Paxton and Linda, a couple on the brink of a break-up during lockdown. When Linda is tasked with moving a high-value diamond from one of her shops, the couple decide to steal it instead. Available on Prime Video.
Leslie Mann in Blithe Spirit
The mum of the famous Apatow sisters returns to her rom-com roots with this bizarre film about a struggling writer Charles who summons the help of a medium (Dame Judi Dench) and accidentally reconnects him with his dead ex-wife. But, he is now remarried – making for a tricky paranormal love triangle. Available on Prime Video.
Sandra Bullock in The Lost City
Whilst largely an adventure film, romance and comedy merge in the storyline as Bullock plays a romance author on a book tour with her cover model (Channing Tatum). Somewhere along the way, they are kidnapped and end up fighting for their lives in the jungle. The wider cast includes Daniel Radcliffe, Brad Pitt and Da’Vine Joy Randolph. Available in cinemas.
JLo in Shotgun Wedding
Darcy and Tom (Josh Duhamel) are trying to enjoy the run-up to their destination wedding, but are distracted by doubts from themselves and their families until the wedding party are taken hostage. The engaged couple, with cold feet, must work together to save their families. Will be available on Prime Video in June.
