While Croatia’s stunning coastline and architecture attracts thousands of tourists year round, its neighbour, Montenegro often goes forgotten. Montenegro boasts quiet hidden beaches set against an impressive mountainous backdrop. It is certainly a great affordable alternative to visiting Croatia this summer. Kicking off my interrailing trip, I checked out the best things to do in Montenegro, and what to avoid.
Transport and Accommodation
As we are travelling on a budget, we opted to stay in an Air BnB in Podgorica, Montenegro’s capital. While the city is reasonably well connected, with scenic train and bus journeys available for a few euros, trains are rather irregular, and most of the stations are very basic so you will want to plan ahead.
Remember there is no Trainline app over here, so get to the station early enough to queue for tickets. The airport train station is strikingly simple and doesn’t have an information desk or timetable. While Podgorica is certainly worth a visit, next time I would definitely consider staying in local coastal town Bar. Bar appeared more tourist friendly and has beautiful beaches and Lake Skadar on its doorstep.
Things to Do
Admittedly Podgorica lacks the historical charm of Croatia’s Dubrovnik. However its green parks and city beaches by the Danube are worth exploring. Full of lively bars and music, Bodeska street is perfect for a drink in the evening, and pints are remarkably cheap. Montenegro shines however in its beaches. We strayed from the beaten track in Bar, and walked over the hills to a secluded beach with idyllic clear waters perfect to cool down in after the hike.
The views of Lake Skadar from the train to Bar were equally unbeatable. Although not quite Niagara Falls, within walking distance of Podgorica, waterfall Niagara is another breathtaking destination for a swim tucked between mountains. The deep clear waters are perfect for diving into from the surrounding rocks and the restaurant Niagara located alongside the falls boasts stunning views. In the late summer months, however, the water may be dried up.
Bordered with historic walls and full of ornate churches, medieval town Kotor runs beside a bay and is definitely worth a visit.
