As those privileged enough to work from home gained newfound free time, the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns have led to the re-emergence of many hobbies, from baking sourdough bread, to learning to roller skate. In an attempt to get away from TV and phone screens, many, between Zoom calls and episodes of Tiger King, picked up a crochet hook.
Why you should learn
This relaxing activity is simpler than it looks. Whether you meet friends to crochet in a café, or you stitch whilst binge watching that Netflix show you’ve been meaning to watch, crochet will undoubtedly boost your mental wellbeing.
Since beginning my first crochet project, I have found my screen time has gotten lower, as when watching TV, I keep my hands busy with my yarn rather than scrolling on Instagram or snacking. Before long you will be creating a fresh wardrobe of colourful bags and cardigans.

What you will need
Crochet is an affordable hobby to begin. I picked up all my supplies at Poundland. All you need is a crochet hook, some yarn and a yarn needle.
Easy items to make for your first project
I was certainly ambitious when I first picked up crochet. I started attempting to make a crop top and soon realised I didn’t know how to keep my stitches even or my edges straight. Before starting your first proper garment its worth practicing stitches in isolation and making some granny squares. I found the following video particularly useful
Once you are comfortable with the basic stitches and hand positions, it’s time to make your first garments. This cute easy crop top uses the half double crochet and is perfect for summer. Alternatively, you can weave your practice granny squares into a colourful tote bag or make a bucket hat to match.
