The nominees for this year’s Emmy awards were announced on Tuesday, July 12. Korean drama show Squid Game made TV history in the awards, by becoming the first non-English show to be nominated in a major category. Elsewhere, Sydney Sweeney notched up two nominations for her roles in Euphoria and The White Lotus.
Members of the Television Academy will pick their winners from the extensive list at the ceremony on September 12. Meanwhile, here are our list of snubs and successes from this year’s Emmy campaign.
Snubs
Sadie Sink
Although Stranger Things 4 scored 13 Emmy nominations, Sadie Sink did not pick up any for her performance as Maxine Mayfield. Her performance in ‘Chapter Four: Dear Billy’ had us all on the edge of our seats and was truly one of the best performances of the decade so far.
As the season was split into two, only volume one is eligible for the 2022 Emmy’s. This year, only work that was released between June 1, 2021-May 31, 2022 could qualify for nomination. So here’s hoping that next year Sadie will be nominated.
Selena Gomez
While her two co-stars Steve Martin and Martin Short were nominated for their roles in the Hulu/Disney+ series ‘Only Murders In The Building’, Gomez missed out on a nomination for ‘Outstanding Lead Actress In A Comedy Series’.
In an interview with The New York Times, Steve Martin spoke out about the situation: ‘We’re dismayed that Selena was not nominated because she’s so crucial to our performances, really’.
OMITB picked up a whopping 17 Emmy nominations, including ‘Outstanding Comedy Series’. Selena Gomez picked up a nomination for her production credits on the show, which has landed her in the history books. Gomez’s production nomination marks the second Latina to ever be nominated for the award in the Emmy’s 74 year history.
Mandy Moore
The final season of This Is Us was a heartbreaker and a heart-mender in equal measure. Central to that was the truly outstanding performance of Mandy Moore.
It has become a long-running cause for dismay that Moore is snubbed year after year and this time it is more surprising than ever. You would be hard pressed to find a better overall performance than Moore’s as matriarch Rebecca Pearson.
Successes
Michael Keaton (Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie) ‘Dopesick’
Michael Keaton gave a truly chilling performance in the Hulu/Disney+series ‘Dopesick’. The series, set in a run-down mining community in America, tells the story of Purdue Pharma creating a new opioid addiction epidemic. Keaton plays a doctor, who tries to help people, eventually ends up getting caught up in the mess himself.
Keaton won a Screen Actors Guild Award for his role in Dopesick in 2022. His Emmy nomination for ‘Lead Actor In A Limited Series Or Movie’ is his second nomination, with his first being in 2004.
Lily James (Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie) Pam & Tommy
‘Pam and Tommy’ received 10 nominations, but this marks Lily James’ first Emmy nomination. The show followed the story of the leaking of the infamous sex tape of rockstar Tommy-Lee and model and actress Pamela Anderson. James was totally unrecognisable as Pam, and gave the performance of a lifetime in her role.
Despite the initial backlash received regarding Anderson’s disapproval towards the show, ‘Pam and Tommy’ turned out to be a massive success among viewers.
‘What If… Doctor Strange Lost His Heart Instead of His Hands?’ Marvel Studios (Outstanding Animated Program)
The Marvel series ‘What If?’ offered an insight into the multiple possibilities that could have happened in the MCU. The episode ‘What If… Doctor Strange Lost His Heart Instead of His Hands?’ followed Dr. Strange as he loses his one true love and uses the eye of Agamotto in multiple dangerous attempts to rewrite the past.
The cartoon episode features the original voices of Benedict Cumberbatch, Rachel McAdams, Benedict Wong and Tilda Swinton.
